Anyone else just not in the holiday spirit?

With Christmas less than a week away, I just don't feel as into it this year as I have in the past.

For financial reasons, DH and I have decided not to trade gifts this year, so maybe that has something to do with it...but I don't know, we've still done other shopping and wrapping for other family members.

I have bins of decorations that I usually put up every year just sitting in my garage untouched this year...we put our tree up, and a couple of my favorite Christmas decorations, but I've toned it down this year a lot.

Anyone else feeling this way?

Re: Anyone else just not in the holiday spirit?

  • Definitely! We are not exchanging gifts either to save for baby. Both of our families are stressed about getting gifts and is making us want to stay at our house instead of visiting.?

  • I am with you.  I am expecting DH's family tonight and they'll be at our house for the weekend.  I am not up for hosting this year at all!!!  I'm sitting here thinking, "do I really have enough food for this weekend?"  and I really don't think so.
  • ME ME!!! I have been unmotivated to do anything lately. I went from working 72 hours a week, to finding out I was pregnant and working 26 hours a week. I come home and set on my ass. We aren't able to give gifts to anyone this year and I hate it. I know it's not about the gifts but I love giving. I'm going to be baking up some treats to give out. This christmas, just isn't the same!
  • Yes! I know exactly how you feel. We got in the Christmas spirit for my daughter, since this is the year that she really understands the concept of Christmas but other than that, it's not going to be as big as past Christmases. Also, I am not looking forward to going over to family's house and having to smile and act fake all day long..
  • I'm excited to see my family open their gifts and excited to eat some good food. That's pretty much it.

FI won't be together for Christmas this year. And as with you, for financial reasons, we decided to not trade gifts (even though I really want to buy him House seasons on DVD, I may use my Christmas bonus to do so instead of buying clothes)

I just don't feel the same about it this year as I did in the years before.

  • To me, it feels very weird this year. Like it's not really Christmas. This is our first Christmas together and finances are pretty tight, so we're not swapping gifts until after our next paycheck, which is most likely after the 25th. I've put up the tree and decorations (though budget decor it may be), but it's not even cold here now - it's been in the 70s all week, warm breeze through the windows, etc. Hard to believe that money and weather can change my perceptions this much, but it's true! Oh well, we're going up to my parents' next week so maybe it'll "feel" more like Christmas :-)
  • It took me a LONG time, usually my tree and outdoor lights are up the weekend after T-giving.

I did finally decorate the tree last weekend, but opted to not put up outdoor lights.  Too much work!  And I have like 1/4 of my shopping done, because I just have no motivation.   And I am usually SUCH a Christmas girl!

Don;t feel bad - you're definitely not alone!

  • Totally with you. DH and I are not doing gifts either. There are just too many other things to take care of before May.

  • Glad to see I'm not the only one!
  • It's not so much that I'm not in the spirit as in that I have no energy to do anything holiday related.  We opted not to even put up the tree this year because we're trying to clean up our place to get it in order and it seemed silly to take something out of storage when we're trying to put stuff in.  The idea of dealing with family drama over the holidays is totally not sounding like fun either...
  • I'm not...and I have tried!  I think I'm just tired of the hype and all the shopping and the crowds and all the money spent when our economy is crumbling...and with a baby on the way I'm waaaay more focused on preparing for her.  I am, however, super excited for DS because this year he actually understands what's going on and is excited for Santa to come!  But, I haven't baked, haven't decorated as much as usual and we haven't gone to anything Christmasy as a family...not even a Christmas party since MH is working ALL the time!  It's kind of sad to me this year!

  • I am with ya'll.I even tried baking & it did nothing.?

We do plan on have gifts and stuff for Joel since he's understanding Christmas. He met Santa for the "first time" & did OK. Only a small meltdown.

    ?

As for gifts we have stuff for Joel and a gift for my niece who's 1.

    ?

For us we told each other to give each other some money to spend on something but not a large amount under $100.

    ?

We budget for this near the New Year and not touch it for anything. DH is a hugh Dave Ramsey fan. He's all about making a budget.?

  • Eh, my Christmas is already over except juggling the actual holidays. My family came in on Dec 5, stayed through the 14th, and we already had the visit with Grandma/Aunts, Uncles, etc. We did the exchange with my parents and my bro.

I am bummed because we aren't doing ANYTHING for Christmas . It'll probably be a "Jewish Christmas" because our friends (who are Jewish and who we celebrate Hanukkahh with on Sunday/Monday) are just gonna come and hang out and we'll watch movies. I don't know... just doesn't seem Christmassy. I'm so used to having SOME sort of actual extended family over. Even my brother (who lives 13 miles away is going somewhere else.)

But, one thing I am excited about: FINDING OUT THE SEX OF THE BABY!!!

DH and I have it in an envelope and we'll find out Christmas morning. :)
