UPDATE Nurses... Diagnose my DH

So we're still in the ER. DH has a temp of 105. They've done a cat scan blood cultures and started an iv of pain meds and fluids. Now we wait.

Ok, I know not cool, but he's arguing with me about going to the dr.  I say he needs to go.

Yesterday am he had serious back pain, he thought his back was going out, I distinctly asked him if it was his kidney.  He said no, went to work.  Came home and said, maybe it is my kidney, my pee is real dark (coppery color).  He's been having hot flashes and cold sweats, continued pain in his back, and is now peeing blood clots. so awesome... right?  I say we need to see the dr. He says no...

I think it could be stones or something more serious...your thoughts?

Re: UPDATE Nurses... Diagnose my DH

  • Um...I'm not a nurse but blood coming out of anywhere requires a trip to the Dr. ASAP.
  • Loading the player...
  • Um yeah- no doubt it's time for the doctor.  The longer he waits- the worse it can be.

  • Could be a million things.  Doctor for sure.  If it was stones, he would probably be writhing in pain.  Certainly sounds like at least an infection but it could be more serious.  Maybe bladder problems or prostate issues too.  Keep us posted.

  • Um, he needs to be seen IMMEDIATELY. I won't list the possibilities bc some could really freak you out, but he needs a doctor. If his regular PCP can't see him today, he needs to go to the ER.

  • @valstulas can he wait until 3:30? or do I need to make him leave work now? (I'm 30 minutes from him and I told him he's not driving.)

  • Sorry, I just read through my response and realized it sounded really dramatic. If you can convince him to leave work, he should go now.

  • Yikes that doesn't sound good. I hate going to the doctor but if I was peeing blood I would make an appointment ASAP.

Your husband said he would go to the ER... isn't that more expensive than just making a Dr appointment?
yes. he's an asshat.  But all the tests come back faster at the hospital, so less waiting.

  • Yeah the man needs to see a doctor!

I know what you're going through though.  My H refuses to go to the doctor.  He could have a cut so deep that bone is exposed and he will still try to "walk it off".

  • Of course not he is saying if he drops at work he doesn't have to use time off, and their insurance covers it... why oh why is he such an asshat!

    @Valstulas... thanks.

  • I'm sorry he is being - dumb. Totally my husband. I literally dragged him to the doctor after telling him to go for more than a year - the doctor and nurses told him to thank me for saving his life. But, like pp mentioned, a cold and he is calling in for meds and laying around like he is gonna die. Men.

I hope that you can get him to go sooner than later & that they can clear up the problem easily.

  • @KittenD... I know right?  I think he means for test results though... and generally they are pretty good about that piece...but as far as sitting around... we'll be there all night.

  • Sounds like he is scared of what they are going to find. If it helps, you can try to tell him that the sooner he gets treated, the less serious it will be.

I'm sorry he's putting you through this

  • @Rmnam1 Thanks... he's said he'll go afterwork.  we'll hopefully get some meds to deal with it if it's an infection, and maybe something to help break up the stones if that's what it is.

I just hope it's not mega serious.

  • in the mean time tell him to drink lots of water. This happened to me about 2 yrs ago. I went to the Dr. and I hate Drs. They did all theses tests and found nothing. Said it was likely dehydration. But I would definitely get it check out ASAP.

@Sarars128... I said this to him too, he really does drink a lot usually, but since this started, he's not been able to because it hurts and makes him want to puke.

Right?! I think I'm pretty tough, but when I had mastitis after I had Tom-Baby, I couldn't even get through a shower, and my temp was "only" 104+.

  • FX Everything comes back ok. Thanks for helping me convince him to go

I don't know how he functioned like this. But we've been told multiple times that he has crazy high pain tolerance.

  • I'm not a nurse but I am a RT. sounds like whatever he does have is going septic. I agree with all pp. GO GO GO!!!
  • Yikes!!! Good luck!!!
  • Yikes! I hope you get results back soon. I hope he feels better after some medicine!
  • Yikes! Hope he's okay. Update us please. T&p that everything is ok.
  • Sorry ladies we got home @ 10 pm and went straight to bed. DH still feels like crap. But they sent us home with pain meds. Said they would call when the blood cultures came in and would call when they knew if he had an infection and would prescribe antibiotics then. He's still running a fever but only 101.5... they said he still has one to pass and based on the blood in his urine and the dialation of Hus ureter he's already passed at least one.

He woke up about 2am to pee he was shaking uncontrollably and felt very ill send weak he thinks he passed it then but he's not feeling stellar by any means.

I wish they would have prescribed antibiotics at the time rather than wait... better safe than sorry in my opinion.

Thanks for thinking of us. It's sure to be a long weekend.. especially since MIL had already planned to come and still is... yay me ! Poor DH.

  • Thanks for the update. I hope he's feeling better soon!
  • So-it's kidney stones? I missed that post I think... but honestly--- kidney stones don't need antibiotics. They such and are painful (speaking from experience) but it's not an infection... you don't want him on antibiotics if he doesn't need them.
    Lilypie First Birthday tickers
  • @maryoosa its stones but he's carrying a fever of now 103... the Dr herself said that's not usually part of having stones and likely he had an infection. But they are waiting on results... well it's Friday and I would rather be safe than sorry. So I called our PCP and am waiting.

I just don't want to end up in the er again and him be even sicker than he is.
