Does anyone else have a LO that hits themself?

DD just started doing this last week. DH and I hate seeing her do it. We notice it's typically when she's trying to do something (puzzle, reach something etc.) and can't and just seems frustrated so she'll hit herself in the head with her hand(s). Anyone else experiencing this? Not sure how to break her of this except for doing what we're already doing which is stopping her and telling her not to hit but to be nice or gentle. TIA!

  • I this she does it when she's tired and definitely when she's frustrated. When she does this she's typically being a bit whiny already, so she doesn't normally make herself cry but there have been a couple times when I think she has surprised herself and hit herself harder then she meant so and she has cried for a very short time. Hoping this passes soon. It's almost like a coping mechanism she seems to be using!?

  • DS does this a lot. I have asked the dr about it because we were getting concerned. The dr reassured us that he was probably doing it out of frustration.
Does she hit herself in the forehead or on her face? I noticed that when DS's molars started showing up he began hitting the side of his face in his cheek area. I think he was trying to deal with the teething pain.
I just try to hold his hands and say be nice or gentle and try to calm him down. It is so heartbreaking seeing him do it though. I'm glad you posted this!!

  • Maybe a distraction? (I am shooting in the dark FYI) like when she gets like that you always give her the same comfort be it a doll or teddy bear or blankie?  That was she associates whatever shes feeling with something that will allow a less harmful coping mechanism??

Great idea! I'll try anything. Thanks for the input :-)

Oh my gosh! Molars! Duh, didn't even occur to me. Yes, she's cutting all 4 (they're probably 80-90% through). She kind of hits her cheek area up to her side of her head and not always on the same side. DH and I do the same thing you posted. That's all we can think to do. Glad I'm not alone in this. Hope it passes quickly. Teething must be miserable. It's a good thing we don't remember any of it! Thanks!

  • DD pinches her tummy sometimes-- totally random and odd.

I just usually distract her- redirect- get out a toy or get her to clap or play peek-a-boo.
  • I've seen mine do it a few times lately. But, in general, I've just noticed A LOT of experimentation with his body awareness. I think it's just related to that.
  • My son rams his head back on his carseat.  Over and over.  Its crazy!  I have to tell him to stop.  I have no idea why.

  • DD does this all the time. When she gets frustrated or if we tell her no. I always just stop her from doing it with my hands and say something like don't hit yourself silly! something to distract her.
