No Swimming with Dolphins

So my DH and I are heading off on a Caribbean cruise in 12 days.  So Excited!  However, when I was booking excursions for us I found one I was super excited about, but can't do. :(  No swimming with dolphins for pregnant ladies.  The excursion didn't specifically say no pregnant women, but I called to just make sure, and of course, no go.  Super bummer.  The lady told me that is was because pregnant women excrete some hormone that dolphins detect and makes them get all excited.  Being the good scientist I am, I did a little research.  Turns out not hormone related, but apparently lots of anecdotal evidence of dolphins being super interested in and excited about pregnant women.  Apparently they think they may be able to detect the pregnancy with their sonar abilities, which would make sense, since what they do is remarkably similar to an ultrasound.  So no swimming with dolphins because they may become overly excited about your pregnant state and accidentally hurt you.  However, my DH says its because they become murder, stabby, rapey around pregnant women.  LOL!  Here's a good article about the topic and a super hilarious video about dolphin rape.  I promise it's not bad, but will make you giggle. :)

Re: No Swimming with Dolphins

  • There are some
Excursions that are specifically designed for pregnant ladies and dolphin swims!
  • Loading the player...
  • I think I had this one somewhere in my useless knowledge bank but I never cared to look into the reasons why.
Good thing there's tons of other things on cruises to do!

  • 0_o okies... yes the video made me giggle.

Whether they are aware of someone being pregnant or not. I would, as a pregnant woman, be wary about entering the water with a creature reportedly powerful enough to fight off sharks with their nose (I am unable to confirm this as a fact or as a rather interesting myth.)

However,  they are wild animals and as such can be unpredictable. They also have teeth and all it would take is even an accidental scrape to give you a really bad time of it. Mycobacterium marinum came up after a search for dolphin bites. Doesn't sound pleasant.

I am not saying that dolphins are rabid and vicious animals, just that I would take due caution in putting myself into any such situation while pregnant. So I am glad they as a company are cautious. They want to avoid lawsuits I believe.

So its a good decision not to go swimming with the dolphins this time. But I would definitively make plans to go swimming with the dolphins at some point. Its something I have always wanted to do myself!

Enjoy your cruise and bring us all back a souvenir!

  • I had the same experience recently. I was in Puerto Vallarta at about 7-8 weeks pregnant and we were all excited to try some activities or excursions. Once I mentioned that I was pregnant they basically showed me the door :/... I couldn't do a thing!

  • OK somewhat random, and somewhat related - I can't remember if it was on the Bump or elsewhere, but wasn't there some crazy pregnant lady who wanted to go give birth with dolphins somewhere in Hawaii.

I am terrified of monkeys and dolphins too! And mannequins. Mannequins get me the worst. Lol
"I hate the term 'we're expecting'. Expecting indicates that there could be more than one outcome. To me, that term could be properly finished with any number of things, like, 'We're expecting a baby, but it could be a velociraptor..."

  • I went on a cruise last year when I was pregnant with DS.  Very few places will let you go on an excursion if they know you are pregnant.  At this stage they probably wouldn't know BUT you don't want to hold your breath for too long.  We went snorkeling and that was a total fail.  I couldn't breathe right and my center of gravity was all off.  Total mess...I'd rather just sit on the beach next time.
