short version:

i worked on monday 10/21, 38w6d...had mild/medium contractions every time i stood up to pee. at about 2 pm, i made the decision it would be my last day working. contractions started getting stronger and more consistent at about 3pm, left work at 3:30. headed in to hospital at about 8pm? got checked/admitted at 5cm. at about 10:20pm, was 8cm. 12:20am, still 8cm. 1:20am, i started screaming for an epidural (wanted natural), but she said she'd check me first- still 8cm. they offered to break my water first and wait it out a bit. a few minutes later-dr came in and said i was 10cm, ready to push, and she'd break my water anyway. 40 intense minutes later, after begging to die and having the nurse tell me that it was too late for epi (was still screaming for one). i finally was able to get him out. 2nd degree tear, 5 stitches.

longer version:
i kept telling everyone i was going to work until labor--not really knowing if that was true. my desk is really far from the parking lot-and i really don't love any of my coworkers enough to share the journey to the hospital with them in the event i had to. throughout the day monday, every time i got up to pee, i would get strongish contractions, but no other time, really. it made me terrified to pee. at about 2pm i decided i had enough, and was *really* gonna close out all my stuff today and not come in anymore. my scheduled day is 6-2:30..and i ended up staying late to get everything cleaned out. by 3pm, the contractions were getting more consistent. i finally left work about 3:30, and decided to start timing the contractions on the drive home (just a glance at the clock and mental note on spacing).

at about 5pm contractions were about 3-5 mins apart, very painful, but tolerable- i called the hospital and they advised that since i want to go natural, i should stay at home as long as possible. i gave up about 7pm, and made the trek in (after calling my mom to come over and put my daughter to bed, etc). at about 8pm, they checked me in at 5cm. i labored in the room, either leaning over the bed or on a yoga ball. i LOVED my nurse. she was amazing--but eventually had to go home. before she left, she checked me at 8cm at about 10:20pm.

the next nurse was having trouble finding the heart rate of my baby (we had intermittent monitoring) and suggested i lay down so she could get a good listen. after that, i pretty much never got up--i was in too much pain. at about 12:20, she checked me again, and i was still 8cm. at 1:20 i started begging for an epidural, even though i really wanted a natural birth. she said she would check me again because i might be in so much pain because i was "there", but i was STILL at 8cm. nurse suggested having them break my water to see if i can progress faster, get the baby out, and i wouldn't need an epi...so i agreed to that.

dr checked me and she said i was at 10cm and could start pushing (mind you this was like 2 minutes after the nurse checked me at 8cm). she broke my water and we began pushing. she kept saying that i wasn't pushing hard enough, pushing the wrong way (pushing into my stomach, not my vag). she kept telling me to squeeze like i was pooping. eventually, i started feeling the burning sensation and baby was halfway out. halfway "out" they told me to pause...umbelical cord was TIGHT around his neck. scariest minute of my life. after i was given the go to continue pushing..i did and he came out a few mins later. i was able to hold him for about a minute before they took him away (right next to me) and was checked out by nicu nurses, followed by pediatric nurses. he was healthy, and did not need any "special" attention. 40 minutes of pushing, and i got him at 2:03 am.

***TMI section regarding POOP. i pooped. i know this because i did not have an epi. i pooped a lot. when i first started pushing, i kept feeling it start to come out..and i think the reason why it took so long was because i was self conscious about it/it felt weird...not really self conscious i guess, but just weird. once i was able to focus on pooping on the table and not giving a shit about it (lol) was when i finally got to squeeze my baby out. TMI OVER.

not sure if this whole natural thing is worth the hype! super painful (but then again, my first was super painful too with epi--attempted natural and got epi at 9). but i will say that the recovery/healing has gone SO much better so far. i'm in virtually no pain right now..a little stinging when i pee, and a little crampy, but that's about it.

FTM vs STM stats

first:
worked until 38w5d
labor 38w6d
birth 39w0d
total labor/pushing hours 15/3
stats 7lb 6oz, 21", girl
notes: sunnyside/vacuum, severely jaundiced, 9.8% weightloss at 24 hours.

second:
worked until 38w6d
labor 38w6d
birth 39w0d
labor/pushing hours 11/40mins
stats 7lb 10oz, 20", boy
notes: recovery has been much easier so far. 5% weightloss at 24 hours. jaundice numbers looking good, but due to sibling history and being asian, we are still at high risk.

here is my newest little love:
