At what point can I stop worrying ?

I've heard the sids risk drops off st six months and the tummy sleeping is a no no . LO will be six months next week and she has started to turn to her side and tummy to sleep. I don't like her to sleep like that and try to turn her back but it pisses her off. When is it ok to let her stay that way?

Re: At what point can I stop worrying ?

  • Agreed. If she gets there on her own, she's fine to stay that way. Just reduce the SIDS risk factors by eliminating soft toys and loose blankets and keeping her on a firm mattress.

  • I agree with previous posters -- our pedi said that once they can do it on their own, it is fine, but don't place them on their tummies to sleep.

This, but my pedi is actually okay with me placing her on her tummy. She won't sleep until she's rolled over which means she sometimes ends up with her face against the side/leg through the bars/head smooched against an end. If I put her one her belly she pretty much stays put in the middle where she is safest.

  • This question is fraying my nerves too! We are moving LO from our bed BACK to his crib... except now he knows how to roll onto his tummy. It drives me nuts because I have to check on him 5 thousand times to be like, "You still alive? Okay, good..." and there's no point in me trying to roll him onto his back, because he just flips back over two seconds later... Moms who have babies who go down for naps fairly independently... do you roll them once they are asleep, or just let them sleep however?!

  • @Skidderdo - I put him down awake.. when I come check on him he is asleep with his butt in the air. I do not move him because it'll just wake him up and he is a pain to get to sleep anyways.

Sames. For the last month he would only sleep on his stomach but the last week I noticed he moves around more in his sleep. He will go from his back to his tummy to his back again throughout the night. I don't move him. If I ever notice he is trying to bury his face in the mattress, sometimes I'll turn his head to the side. I love our video monitor. It definitely gives me a little more peace of mind being able to see him.

  • DS only sleeps on his stomach at night - I put him down on his back and he automatically flips.

  • You can stop worrying as soon as the baby rolls into whatever sleeping position on his own.
I seriously cannot imagine rolling a baby back onto his back if he rolls onto his tummy. I tried that maybe once with Sonya, and it wasn't pretty.

  • Yep, re-iterating what everyone has said, once they're able to roll both ways the risk reduces significantly. I always put DS down on his back and he 100% of the time ends up on his belly with his bum up, which seems to be the most comfortable for him. Ditto on the video monitor though, it gives peace of mind!
