WWYD - Baby clothing related

So, obviously not the most important problem to spend lots of time pondering on...but since I have some time to kill before going out shopping tonight I figure I'll ask for some opinions!

My LO is due Dec 16th. Tonight I want to go out and attempt to find his coming home outfit and some Christmas outfits for him.

DH was a huge baby when he was born (10lbs 2oz) so he is convinced that our LO is going to be pretty big as well. I'm not so convinced though because my Dr. has said I'm measuring right on track the whole time, although I have not had a growth ultrasound or anything to predict how big LO might actually be.

So in planning to buy outfits for your LO's first couple weeks of life, would you go with NB size and risk it possibly being small on him, or would you skip to 0-3 months and risk the clothes being pretty big and baggy?

Whenever DH looks at NB size clothes he says there is no way our little guy will fit into them lol (like he has some kind of device to look into the future or something). I would HOPE that my LO will fit into NB size for at least those first couple weeks, but I would also hate to have his first pictures with him in clothes that are too tight for him.

So, WWYD? NB or 0-3 months?

Re: WWYD - Baby clothing related

  • I would buy both and return what you don't need. L was in NB for 4 weeks, and I hate having too big clothes on a NB because I'm obsessed with not having too much extra fabric around his face.

  • Get one of each and keep the receipt? Just buy them closer to your due date since I know some places only allow 30 days to return.

  • I have been worrying about the same thing. My plan is, I have 3 NB outfits that I got for my Little Man and the rest are going to be 0-3 mos. I'm due dec. 8 but will probably go early. So Christmas time I do not expect him to still be in NB. I do have an outfit in 0-3 that I like for a coming home outfit just in case. Luckily I haven't gotten a lot of NB clothes new so if he's big I won't really have to return anything. Since you are a little closer to Christmad I might buy both sizes just in case and not take the tags off of those until after you LO is here. You will probably be fine with a coming home outfit being NB (I think but am not an expert). Good luck, I hope this helps.
  • I have been having the same problem. I'm due on the 14th. I am guessing that our little girl will be on the smallish side so I have been buying newborn clothes for the coming home outfit and for Christmas.

  • Unless your Dr gives you reason to believe your LO wont be so little then I'd buy a few NB things for sure. Both of my boys were both 6 lbs and were in NB clothes for awhile because they swam in 0-3 months. If you're more comfortable with keeping tags on *just in case* so you can take it back if he is above average then do that! We realized last week that this baby is more than likely going to be smaller than my boys were so we bought a few preemie outfits and are keeping tags on them.

  • DS was 9 lb 9 oz so mostly went straight to 0-3 mo but still fit in a few NB outfits.

  • I've been having the same issue my little girl is due December 16 as well & I really want to buy her a beautiful Christmas dress but wasn't sure what size to purchase I'm guessing I'm going to buy two different sizes as suggested above :D

  • For the coming home outfit, I'd buy one of each size and return what you don't use.  As for the other clothes, I'd still get some newborn things since it doesn't sound like your Dr thinks your LO will be larger than average.

DH and I were both over 9lbs at birth, but our LO has seemed to be right at about 50th percentile.  I've bought 2 or 3 NB sleepers new, and about 5 or so from consignment sales--that way if he/she isn't in NB long, it isn't much $ wasted.

  • Like others said, I'd get mostly 0-3, but definitely buy some NB and just keep the tags on. You just never know till they are born! DD was 6lbs 15oz, but lost a bunch in the first few days (as is normal) and got down to 6lbs 4oz. She was wearing NB clothing for quite a few weeks. I'd put 0-3 mos on her and she'd be swimming in most of it. I'm thinking this one will be a similar weight, so I'm thinking we'll be in mostly NB clothing at first too.

I think a lot of places will give you a longer timeframe if you just exchange for things in bigger sizes, but I'd check depending on the store.
