Anyone try the Bradley Method?

My husband and I have some pretty strict religious customs. Our religion itself isn't open for debate, however I'm hoping some of you may be able to answer some questions about the Bradley Method--respectful answers, please!
We've read Husband-Coached Child Birth and really enjoy it, and are looking further into the Bradley Method. However, due to our religious customs, we're a little concerned about some of the classes.  We're not worried about the actual application of the information during labor, just the administering of the information during class. How graphic are the classes? Are they modest or do they contain nudity? Do they offer private classes where perhaps this could be customized for religious preferences?
Any insight would be much appreciated!
Thank you!
Bless,
Kate

I'm sure all classes are conducted differently, check your local area to see, if not maybe inquire if they'd be willing to do a class that can incorporate your religions modesty requirements.

  • Most instructors will show you videos of live birth. However, each instructor is different. The lady who taught my class also did private classes, so that may be an option for you.

We watched a live birth every class. It was at the very end so it's possible you could leave at that point if you're teacher follows the same pattern.

Eta: Haha, no idea why I said it that way. We didn't watch actual live births. We watched videos of births. Just to be clear. ;)
  • I am currently taking a Bradley class. I agree with others, that it will vary by class. I think the best thing you could do would be to contact the instructor of the class you are considering taking, and discuss your concerns. They can tell you exactly what will be shown, and I'm sure they would be fine with letting you know in advance when there will be birth videos shown, and you can choose to be out of the room for that. We are about halfway through the 12 week classes, and while we haven't seen any what I would consider explicit "nudity" , we have twice seen videos of actual birth, where, yes, you see a vagina with a baby coming out. It doesn't strike me as nudity, since its not like a naked lady strutting around, it's just a medical video. (Actually, wait, now that I think about it, I think we did see another video with quick shots of women giving birth and breastfeeding topless, etc.) so, obviously, only you can determine what you are comfortable watching, but im sure an instructor wouldn't have a problem if you wanted to step out of the room during any videos! Either way, I'd highly recommend the class! Good luck!

  • We did the Bradley class as well, and the videos will have women giving birth. We watched one pretty much every class. There was at least one or two where the women were completly nude. Part of the signs of progression of labor is losing modesty, so the video shows that. I echo what pp have said and contact your local instructor/s. We really enjoyed the class and it was very helpful for us, the videos were especially helpful for DH to realize what really would happen to me at that time.

  • There is no nudity in my class but the illustrations show the female body. Everyone comes from a different back ground so the instructor is pretty respectful as to try not to offend anyone. So far we have not watched any child birthing videos. Bradleybirth.com has ways of contacting the instructors in your area. Contact them and ask them the questions you need answered in regards to your religion.
  • Thank you all very much!! I'm meeting one-on-one with a Bradley instructor in my area in 2 weeks and will get to discuss our options then.
