Embryo Adoption

Hi! I'm MJ and I regularly post over on IF but thought you ladies would be a great group to get the conversation started on embryo adoption.  We just had our 2nd failed IVF...mostly due to egg quality.  We will try at least 1 more time with OE but have started to consider embryo adoption.  I've started doing some research online, but thought I would see if you ladies had any advice or tips with getting the process started...or great places for more research.  I guess I do have a few questions...when you move forward with EA are you guaranteed a certain amount of embryos you can adopt? Or does it vary? Also...are you choosing open or closed EA and why? Thanks ladies!

Re: Embryo Adoption

  • Hi MJ! I'm sorry about your failed cycles, but I hope that if Embryo Adoption is the path you wish to pursue, that it will lead you to grow your family. :)

I have an informational tab on my blog that gives loads of information to people who are just starting out. It's located here: https://www.wishingonasnowflake.com/p/once-you-decide-to-begin-researching.html

The answer to your question will wildly vary depending on the path you decide to choose.

We chose open adoption and I'm so glad we did, but there are pros and cons to both. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!

  • Good luck with your research. Embryo adoption is a great thing to consider. Also maybe do some research on egg donation. I know it is a bit more expensive but if you would like to try using DHs sperm it could be a good way to go as well. We were able to cut down costs in half...by sharing a donor with another couple and split the amount of eggs she produced. Just a thought for you because I didn't know this existed when I started looking into embryo adoption.

Thank you! We have talked about donor egg too.  Right now, DH is set against it...BUT we aren't at that point yet so we will have that conversation once we are ready to make that decision.  Thanks for your help!

  • I can't offer any advice on EA, but out of curiosity, what are the reasons behind your husband being against donor eggs but not EA? I think mine would be the other way around!

9/15/14 - Our first son born thanks to donor eggs at RBA after 7 failed own egg IVF cycles.

Met with RE 4/11. 2 IUI's BFN. DE best option. Switched clinics to do "shared" program. Had to retake all tests and a mamm that put me behind and then on a DE waiting list for 12 months. Picked a donor!! (10/13/13) Got matched. Estimated transfer in December. After 2.5 years of patiently waiting I will finally cycle....can hardly believe it. DE cycle got cancelled. One of her tests came back positive.  Waiting for another donor. Donor picked!! (1/18/14)

  • I can't speak for MJ, but MH was against donor eggs in favor of donor embryos as well. He was more open to traditional adoption and wanted to go that route, so I think the donor embryo route was kind of a compromise for us. It's kind of an adoption and I also get to experience pregnancy. His reason for not wanting to try donor eggs was that he thought he would feel like it was his baby with another woman, despite me being PG. I know he wouldn't feel that way in the end but he was adamant that our children come from either both our genetic material or neither.

Yes, my DH is the same.  He feels like he would be having a baby with another woman even though I would be PG and it just seems really weird to him.  I do get where he is coming from and am not sure if I 100% agree with him.  Luckily, we aren't at the point where we have to make a decision...we are still going to try one more time with OE.  BUT it will take me time to get over the fact that if we did EA, the child won't have biological ties to either of us.  I always had hope that even if we used DE, at least he would be biologically connected. We have our WTF appointment tomorrow, so we will see what the doctor recommends but we are pretty set on trying one more IVF cycle with OE.
