Help me! (wall decals)

I bought these adorable wall decals from Menard's for LO's room and thought I would put them up today. The walls are freshly painted but the decals won't stick! I've tried using the heatbof my hand and a credit card to get it to stick but after a few minutes they peel off. Anyone have ideas?

Re: Help me! (wall decals)

  • How "freshly painted" are the walls?

Could it just be a defective decal?
Dh finished the walls last week, I don't know about the decals I haven't been able to look up a lot of info on them.

  • Are your walls textured or smooth? Some decals just won't stick to textured walls.

It's an old house so they're plaster with some texture. We had no problem with the decals we bought for DD's nursery two years ago, these are a different company. They're glow in the dark stars if that makes a difference.

  • What kind of paint did you use? We discovered nothing sticks very well to our paint. :( We used Sherwin-Williams HGTV Home.

We used Behr Paint and Primer in one, same as DD's room.  I'm thinking maybe these decals are thicker, and supposedly able to restick once you move them making them a PITA for non-perfectly smooth walls.

  • What paint have you used, our stickers had instructions to use on silk or matt only.
  • Maybe wallpaper glue?
  • Sounds like it might just be the decals then :( Sorry you are having trouble with them! We are hoping to do some Decals too but I'm worried because my walls are very textured.
  • Thank you ladies for troubleshooting with me :'( I'm giving it a break until DD takes a nap

  • Did you get eggshell/ satin or semi gloss paint? They might not stick well to semi gloss.

That is the paint we used and found decals online at dalidesigns that seem to stick well to it.
I read that most decals will not stick well to low- or no-VOC paint, though I don't know why.

  • I ordered decals but haven't attempted to put them up yet The instructions said to wait 2-3 weeks after painting before trying to put them up.

Also guessing the textured walls are not helping.

I hope you figure it out!

Interesting! We can't even get Command strips to stick, so we assumed nothing would.
  • FYI the possibly defective decals are Blue Mountain brand Stars and Moon decals. I knew it was too good to be true, 400 stars for $8 on clearance.

  • We just put decals on our walls in the nursery and we had to go over it a million times with a credit card, a damp cloth and we had to pull the paper off super super slow! If we noticed one wasn't sticking we covered it back up and went over it again a few more times and it worked. My instructions also said not to put on walls that had been painted in the last 2 weeks.

  • We bought decals on Etsy, and are waiting to put them up because the instructions say to wait 6 weeks after painting for the paint to fully cure, otherwise, they won't stick well. Our instructions also said to mist the walls with really diluted dawn dish soap, then let them dry fully, to remove any residual oils.
  • I've been told by some people that make wall decals that freshly painted walls need 8-12 weeks to cure before putting up decals or they won't stick...
