help please :)

My DS is 5wks 4 days and because of BF issues we are exclusively FF and have been since he was in the hospital. The hospital gave us Gerber Goodstart Gentle but DS seemed to be having tummy troubles (really bad gas). We thought it was the formula so we switched to enfamil newborn but the gas was worse but he seemed to do better with the nipples that came with the pre made enfamil bottles. So we switched back to Gerber Goodstart Gentle but kept the other nipples. As weeks have gone by we realized that he was gulping down the milk and that the milk was coming out really fast from that nipple and thought that might be part of the cause of his gas troubles (still crying while feeding, bad gas , trying to have a bowel movement but not happening a lot) but he is still having at least 1 bowel movement a day, gaining weight as should be and having 6-8 wet diapers a day. We took him to his pedi to make sure that he didn't have reflux and to see what we could do to relieve him. We explained to pedi how we make sure we burp him after every 1/2 ounce, make sure his head is above his stomach while feeding and for at least 30 mins after eating and that he is spitting up what seems to be a lot during feeding now. They said that they thought it was just gas and no more and just to keep doing what we are doing, etc. but he is miserable when he eats (not normal to me :( ) Also , now as he is eating , the milk is leaking out of his mouth. We have tried Avent Newborn and 1 month wide nipple , Dr. Brown standard nipple , Gerber $3.00 bottles (standard nipple) , Nuk bottles, Medela and tommee tippee bottles, and playtex vent wire slow flow with wide nipple. The nipples are all  either too slow too fast or too wide ..anyone with the same issues? any suggestions? Just want LO to be comfortable when he is eating. Also, since day one he will only sleep in our arms and he cries and cries when we try and do tummy time. :(

FYI: He was born 7 lbs 6 oz and came naturally on his own on his due date. He is 11lbs 1 oz as of last week and is eating 2-5 oz every 2-4 hours with no other known issues aka perfectly healthy.

  • Also , pedi said that don't recommend gripe water or gas drops because , her words "we don't really know what's in them".

  • Well we used good start and tommy tippee and used gas drops. They seemed so always soothe our gassy little LO. However we did tommy tippee because we tried to BF and tomee tippees seem to better resemble a nipple

  • Meh, my Dr. recommended gas drops and gripe water and they work wonderfully for my sons gas. We also use avent nipples.

  • We had bad gas problems too! Ped told us to use enfamil gentle ease and tommy tippee anti colic and she's been a dream since!

  • We use dr.brown bottles as well. However we use the wider kind, not the tall skinny ones. Ds was getting really fussy and so we switched his bottles to the dr. Brown ones and he is a whole new baby. He is happy and not as gassy/fussy. We use the up and up formula of the enfamil.
  • I know it's hard to see them uncomfortable but you need to stop switching the formulas so quickly and give each one about 2 weeks before deciding it doesn't work.  The sheer switching all by itself can cause tummy problems, which is then attributed to the actual formula.  They make gentle formulas specifically for gas (we use Target's gentle version) so if you do decide to try one more switch, try one of those.  Also, your pedi's opinion on the gas drops sounds like a personal preference vs a medical fact.  Gas drops are safe and are FDA approved.  Go with your mommy gut on this one.

I know you've only tried two kinds but you've actually made 3 switches -  breastmilk to Goodstart, then Goodstart to Enfamil, then Enfamil to Goodstart.  Even though he'd had the Gerber before, it's the changing that can cause upset, not the formula itself, kwim?  Definitely try the gas drops :)
