Adoption

Early intro

Hi. I've been lurking a little bit, and I wanted to show my face. My  husband and I have just started researching adopting through the foster care system. We have a 2.5 year old daughter, and we want to add to our family, but for a few personal reasons, we decided not to TTC. Adoption has been on my heart for about 14 years since I was in my early 20s, and so we begin.

We are putting our current house on the market in February, so I think we'll probably wait to begin the paperwork process until then. There would be no point in doing a home study in our current home since 1. we don't have an extra bedroom and 2. we're moving soon anyway. In the mean time, I'll be lurking around here and checking out some of your book recommendations.

I read the FAQ about positive and respectful adoption language. I will work on getting it down and hope I don't say anything offensive in the meantime

All advice and words of wisdom are welcome. :)

  • Welcome!  I am also adopting through Foster Care.  I look forward to chatting with you.
Live like there is no tomorrow..Love like you have never been hurt...
  • Welcome! We are currently getting licensed and also moving. I am not sure how it is where you live, but where we live we can go ahead and get licensed and then when we move they will just make one visit to update our home study. The licensing process has taken us about 4 months, so we are glad we went ahead and started. Just a thought. Best of luck to you!

Thank you! This is one of the questions I've been asking around about, but I hadn't talked to anyone with this experience. This is helpful. I appreciate it!

  • We are currently pursuing foster parent licensing. We aren't moving, but the "home" part of the home study is only a small piece. You can definitely start, if that's what you want to do. In our area, the classes are only offered once a year, so you can at least inquire and find out exactly what is involved in your area.

    Good luck!
***************************** Our beautiful daughter was born in October 2009. Turns out she was quite the miracle. After two years of TTC, diagnosed with DOR. A couple of failed treatment cycles later, we decided to let go of our hope for more biological children and explore adoption.
  • Hello, and welcome!
  • Welcome!

Mother of two wonderful boys! Blessed through adoption.

  • Welcome! We are also in the very early stages and planning on moving around February. Like you, we are delaying our home study until then.

    Started TTC July 2012. Missed m/c & d&c 9/12 11w. Natural m/c 1/13 6w. Chemical pgs 3/13 & 8/13 around 4w. Currently TTA while saving for adoption.

  • I finally got in touch with someone from DCS after days of playing phone tag! She recommended that we begin PATH is January or February once we put our house on the market because home study is time sensitive to the completion of PATH. I'm glad we at least got in touch with someone. I guess I'll mostly lurk for the next few months until we get started.
