Getting rid of the video monitor at this stage?

Hi all- are you still using monitors? Recently their video monitor broke. Since it broke I've actually slept better bc I'm not staring at it for every sound. My twins sleep in separate rooms upstairs and we sleep downstairs. I can hear them as we don't live in a mansion. The monitor is under warranty so BRU sent us the gift card to replace it. I'm really debating do we need it now at this stage bc I do sleep better or would you recommend us replacing it as they head towards 2 years old? Thoughts?

I still use a regular monitor, I never had a video though. I can't hear my baby's room from mine unless he is really wailing though, plus after he goes to bed and I go downstairs I would never be able to hear him.

We love our video monitor. We usually have the volume on the lowest setting and just use it to peek at her to see if she's making dream noises or is awake. I don't obsess over using it though. Actually I think I would obsess over not using it.

Hi all! I'm back to work so I've been so busy! Miss u all too! Yeah we are just trying to see if we should put that large sum of money towards something else. Although I did like watching ESP when they are sick. But my sleep has so improved!

I can't let it go but I have different reasons. I love my monitor. I can't imagine not being able to check on him when I wake at night.

I don't plan on getting rid of ours anytime soon. We're on different floors then DS and it has saved us lots of trips...by us, I mean me

I would pass on the video monitor and get just regular ones. Like pp have said it is nice to have then so you can do stuff during naps and take the monitor with you.

I am keeping ours for a while especially since DS has been trying to climb out of the crib. I can yell at him from out bedtoom when I see him do it on the monitor.

.... That sounds really lazy. I don't go into his room because he wouldn't go back to sleep. If I "yell" go back to sleep he lays right down and doesn't attempt climbing out again.

I still use audio. I forgot to bring into my bedroom for the first time recently and slept so soundly! Our rooms are adjacent to each other so I would definitely hear him if he cried.... I think I might move towards not using it... but will probably relapse with a cold or cough.

I don't plan on getting rid of ours anytime soon. Dd is still not sttn but we're close. I like to be able to look at the monitor and tell if she's really awake or just stirring. Like pp said sometimes I turn the volume on low or off if I'm within earshot.

If you're sleeping better without it, why get a new one?

We have a regular monitor. I take it with me if I go in the pool during his nap, or when I'm in the kitchen. I can hear him from my room.

We used our video monitor maybe 4-5x. DS slept in his rock and play in our room until he was 5-6 mths old. Then when we switched him to his room (adjacent to ours) we used it once. I forgot it downstairs one night and realized 1. we could hear him without the monitor and 2. i slept better bc i could not stare at it all night. If it was me, I would not replace it. I agree it is definitely personal preference and the layout/size of your house.

My kids share a room, too, but the camera is pointed at the 14-month-old. I wanted to be able to make sure DD wasn't throwing stuff into his crib, esp. before he was one.

That said, for DD's first two years, we only had an audio monitor and that was fine. I only got the video because both kids were in the same room. If I were you, OP, I would probably just get a cheap audio monitor and use the rest of the gift card for something else.

Same here. Sometimes she makes noise but isn't actually awake, so I like being able to spy on her. We are getting a second camera for baby #2, and I guess the monitor scans back and forth between the two cameras.

I've always used just a regular sound monitor and I used till about 3 years old with Christian. I don't plan on getting rid of Liam's any time soon. Especially because he's on the other side of the house.

We definitely use our video monitor still with our 14 month old and don't have plans on stopping any time soon. It's so convenient. Great at night but also perfect for nap time. It allows us to walk freely about the house to get things done when she naps. Our monitor scans from one camera to the next as well so will be super useful when we start ttc. @NeneCakies I agree with you. I'd be obsessed without it!

We don't have a video monitor, but I still use the audio monitor. I can't hear him from my room until he really starts wailing. I use it more for morning wake up, because he wakes up and will talk very quietly to himself for god knows how long. I like to know when he's officially awake for the day, so I know when he needs a nap.

I guess I'm the odd one, as usual, but I only had an audio monitor & I stopped using it by 5 months with DS, and probably by 3 months with DD. They were sleeping through the night, so that was the only reason I needed it before - so I would make sure to wake up to feed them. If they make little noises or move around at night or naps, I don't need to know. If they're really upset & crying, I can hear them from anywhere in the house (granted, our house is pretty open).

I'm confused as to why people need monitors to give them freedom to go to other areas of the house during nap time.

I bought it! And my son was ill that night so I was glad to have it to watch and help him. Didn't sleep that well though

@paisleyruth I can't hear J in certain parts of the house (or in the back yard) so I wouldn't know if he was awake, or crying.
