I mentioned last week that I had a job interview yesterday. Well I was offered the position this afternoon. The salary and benefits package is fairly decent and if it is the "Best" they can provide I will accept.
However, I feel like people expect you to counter their original offer in some way so most do not offer the max they are willing to give off the bat. My husband on the other hand thinks they only expect you to negotiate if its an upper management position which it is not.
What says A12? Try to negoiate a slightly higher salary or just accept what was offered? I don't want to offend or come off as pushy because this really is an ideal position for me.
To clarify when doing research there is about a 20k range in salary for this position nationally depending on cost of living, education, and experience. We live in a low cost of living area. But I have a Masters and am on the higher end of the experience range. They are offering at the plus 7k area of the range. I think I should be at the plus 10k range so I thought I would counter at the plus 13k range and hope they split the
difference. What do you all think?
Update: I ended up only being able to squeeze another 2k out of them BUT they did write into the contract that I would get a guaranteed 15% bump in salary upon completion of my registration exams. (There are 7 and I have 2 left) so I am pretty happy with the outcome!

But I feel like doing SOME type of negotiating is necessary even if it is minimal in order to set precedents for future raises and promotions. If you start off as a pushover you will always be viewed that way and probably be offered less in future negotiations. I feel that was my problem at my previous employer, I took what they offered off the bat not knowing better and after 4 years had only received a 2% raise overall that I had to fight tooth and nail to get even that!
