Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Fever after 6 mo. vaccinations

So DD had her 6 month appt yesterday and got 1 oral dose of something and 4 shots, 1 of which was her flu booster.  She was quite fussy afterward but took a good nap during grocery shopping and then went down for bed at 7:30pm.  At 3am she woke up super hot.  The pedi said this might happen and I could give her infant tylenol if needed - which I did.  It being my first time giving her any medication I only gave her half a dose since I was terrified.  I then put DD in bed with me and DH and she fell right to sleep.  She was only a little warm when she woke up at 6:30am so I sent her to my MILs (her day to watch DD) with the tylenol in case the fever returned.

For those whose LOs have had a reaction to any vaccines - how long did it last?  This is the first time she's had any sort of reaction, there was nothing to note after her 2 and 4 month appts except a little redness at the injection sites.  I'm thinking the fever might have been from the flu shot since she's had the other vaccines before.  If DD has a fever again tonight should I take her to the ER?  Note: she wasn't fussy with the fever, but every part of her body was hot to touch - even her hands which are usually cool/cold.  Anyone else get their LOs the flu shot?  We go back the day after Thanksgiving for the 2nd dose, since it's her first flu shot ever - should I expect this same reaction??

Re: Fever after 6 mo. vaccinations

  • DS1 usually got a fever after all his vaccines. DS2 so far has only gotten one with his 6 month vaccines and it wasn't really high (like 100-101). It lasted about a day. What was her temp? There is no reason to go to the ER unless it's very high, like 105. If the temp doesn't go down with Tylenol (btw, at this age, I've found Motrin to be a better fever reducer), then you can call your doctor.

This is a good site - my pedis actually link it from their homepage, since it's from the AAP.

  • Her temp was 100.something, definitely less than 101 but her skin felt so hot when I touched her and it was everywhere - legs, belly, head, neck, hands.  My MIL has her today because I couldn't take off work and she said she was still a bit feverish but again not over 101 so she gave DD another 1/2 dose, put her in a onesie and socks and she's just been relaxing all day.  She's usually the most active baby so it's weird when she just lounges holding a teddy or blanket.

    Thanks for the link!!

  • Mine had even higher fever after the same shots at 6 months. Lasted 2 days at 101 to 103. I gave him ibuprofen and let him sleep in fewer clothes to keep comfortable.
  • My daughter just got the first part of her flu shot on Friday. She also had a low grade fever and a little bit of leg pain. Before she gets any shots I usually give her Tylenol (recommended by my pedi) and then I give her another dose afterwards. Her fever was only 99.9. Other than that she has had no reactions. She goes in for her 9 month check up and her second dose of the flu shot in 3 weeks.
  • If you only gave her hf dose, it most likely was not enough to do much. Don't worry if she gets a fever - it's the body's reaction to fighting off the illness. DS had a fever and it was gone the next day. No ER trip necessary. You could also try giving her a bath to help cool her down. I bet she'll be fine in no time :)
  • My little guy is typically fussy for about 24-48 hours after his shots. In terms of taking her to the ER, it's not really needed unless it's pretty high. My Pedi actually suggested we not give our guy tylenol unless his fever was 102 or above- he said that the fever can actually improve the body's immune response to the vaccines.
  • Thanks everyone - DD had a slight fever through Friday afternoon/evening but when she woke up on Saturday even DH said she seemed like her old self.  She was the happy active baby we're used to!  I feel much more prepared for her next dose after Thanksgiving now!
