NBFR DS's Bday Vent-ish

DS's 5th bday theme is Batman. DS said in April that he either wanted a Batman or Superhero theme, and a week later we found Batman stuff in the $1 section at Target. So Batman it was. We got a bunch of Batman themed stuff for favors.

Or so I thought. I just now found the stuff, and all I got was mini tote bags, puzzles, stamps, and sticker books for 8. Seeing the stuff is jogging my memory, and I remember I originally had enough for 12, and thought there was no way there would be that many kids as it's mostly just family, and 8 will be more than enough. There will be 11 kids. And I originally also had Batman pencil pouches, Batman pencils, Batman notebooks, and other items, but then decided to cut back, because all those $1 items add up fast.

Ugh. Just ugh. There's 7 boys and 4 girls, so I'm just going to get something different for the girls. Any ideas for the girls? I saw Wonder Woman cups for $1 at Walmart a couple weeks back, hopefully they're still there. And some more items to spruce up everyone's? I was thinking yellow silly string. And I plan to have dark chocolate covered pretzels with yellow drizzle for everyone as a favor, adults included.

Re: NBFR DS's Bday Vent-ish

  • First of all, I know you are sweating about goody bags, but most kids don't care after the party is over!

I would go with either Wonder woman, or if there are any female Marvel or Avengers characters.

  • I stopped doing treat bags last year. Instead, I do something else. Like for SK bday, they did an activity (like ride a ride at park, play a game at park, etc.) it cost a small amount of money & was actually less than what I would have spent on gift bags.

DC's bday is in winter, so no parks. Instead, they will watch a movie related to theme & will do an indoor activity also related (but will be something they can take home). Fun, simple, an no very annoying toys for other parents to deal with.

Also, I buy cupcakes in addition to the cake, one for each child, they get their own cups & special drink as well.

@andrea99 I plan to check the $1 section and see if the maybe have solid colored tote bags. DH is weird and has a strong distaste for 'The Little Mermaid,' he says it's because "she's a self entitled little girl who sells her soul to the devil and still ends up with exactly what she wants." I guess he has a point, but no one really realizes that, especially little girls. lol

I'm trying to steer clear of that. I thought the sticker books were cool, and the puzzles are nice, 50 piece puzzles. I feel like homemade, edible stuff (the chocolate covered pretzels) is a win, right? And I plan to have the kids have a silly string "fight" in the yard before the party's over, that way there's no mess for parents. I'll look into activity vouchers, that's a really good idea.

Pssh...  Ariel was my favorite.  I literally wore out the VHS when I was little.  She's a badass ginger.  What's not to like?
I thought she was awesome. DH is warming up ;).

If my daughter attended you would have to give her Batman. Obviously she isn't but as I read what you are doing for girls i thought if her and how she wouldnt want anything to do with WW. She is such a tomboy!!

Yeah! I think the sticker books and puzzles are great! Edible stuff would be too, I'd just limit the amount especially so close to Halloween, but that's just me personally. That's why I do the cupcakes :)

Silly string fight before they leave is a good idea too! So they get the 'really awesome silly string' but like you said no mess for parents.
  • Oh and I got a dozen Batman Look & Find books, as DS LOVES the look & find books. 12 for $4 on ebay - woot!

  • This is making me think of DS' s Bday coming up in December. No one, hardly even family, has ever shown up for DS' s birthdays in the past so I will not be doing party favors.

I have been thinking of doing a water gun paint fight. I was inspired by pinterest, and I think water and food coloring will make safe ammo for a dollar store water pistol. I would provide smocks for everyone though. Then the kids could take home their water gun.

Or decorating Christmas ornaments to keep and take home. Or maybe pine cones.

I would rather my child participate in an activity than being home ask that useless junk that is going to break layer that day. After a party I am always trying to sneak the bag away from him to get rid of it.
  • @ambrvan why does no one come? Too close to Christmas?
  • Well my family lives a good distance away and my grandmother is the only one who really takes an interest in DS anyway. And on DH's side, MIL, GIL, CousinIL and son are really the only ones who are vested in us. We have another cousin and her baby and H's aunt that are around right now but only because they are living with GIL across the street from us. FIL and that side of the family don't come around if MIL and family will be around (if they come around at all).

So must functions we do are just the four of us, MIL, SFIL, GIL, and one of H's cousins and her 6yo son.

Me too. I hate the little noise makers and useless plastic crap. Does my favor bag sound too "junky?" Now that I think about it, the ink stamps are. What about the rest?

    There, there, it's okay.

I told him that NO ONE realizes that. I told him that it's a cute movie that kids love. At first he was all "DD can't have any Little Mermaid toys! I agreed that I wouldn't go out of my way to buy any for his sake, but I wasn't going to return any that other people got her. I'm going to ask people to get DD LM stuff for Christmas... ;)

  • I just suggested to DH that Santa should get me the new version of the Little Mermaid on DVD for my Christmas stocking!

She may be a self entitled little girl but she makes a deal with the devil for love. That makes everything okay....

So I had to go back and re read this because at first I thought you said your son said that and I was like but wait isn't he kind of young to get all of that from The Little Mermaid? Haha. Oh and since we have watched it more times than I can count since my mom got it for LO this month, she's a sea witch not the devil...not sure if that makes it any better haha
  • We don't do gift bags, we do crafts!  With the number of foamy sticker sets out there, you can get a package of decrorate your own <insert thing> for 24 kids at $9.

Or, you can go on line and look up spiderman and wonderwoman activity pages and print out a booklet of color pages, mazes, cut outs, etc for the kids to take home.

Monkey is getting foamy masks for Mardi-Gras this year I think.
