Phobias

Today's UOs inspired me to ask:

Does anyone have any phobias? If so do you have any creative ways of dealing with it?

I'm absolutely terrified of bees and wasps. I break out into cold sweats, my heart goes a million miles a minute, I can't function if I see one. It's quite debilitating really, I'm actually scared to go out in the summer because of it (of course, I still do though). I'm really worried that if I don't get it under control it's going to have a negative affect on LO and she'll develop the same irrational fear. Thoughts?

Octopus. I'm terrified. I've never seen an octopus in my life yet the mere thought of them make me quiver. I can't watch tv shows or read books about them. It's a weird weird phobia.

Also, this may sound really weird...but short super buff guys remind me of thumbs. I get weird when I'm around one. Judge me.

I have no ways of dealing with phobias, sorry.

  • @CaliforniaDream87 Oh my god, I thought I was the only person that thought that! I seriously pee myself when I see a short buff guy and just imagine him without a face.

  • I'm terrified of anything touching my Achilles' tendon. Like I think something will slice it and it makes me stomach turn. It's very irrational. Freaks me out.
  • Im terrified of snakes. And not a normal scared of snakes. I will break down cry have anxiety attack if im in the same room as one.

My older sister dumped a sandbox pale of garter snakes on me when we were really little. Now if i see one all i think off is all those snakes crawlung all over me.

The only way i can be around snakes is if im drunk off my ass. Not creative and not a great way to deal. This is why bf isnt allowe to have pet snakes.

  • @zever000 holy crap! I really thought I was the only one. My H and family thinks it's the weirdest thing.

  • Glass elevators. I have to stand right at the door looking down at my feet even if it's just going up one level. I also hate going up escalators, I get queezy thinking about falling backwards. For some reason it's not so bad going down, just going up.
  • Don't know if it's really a phobia but when I'm watching a scary movie I always have to have my feet covered because I always feel like some is going to cut my akilleas (sp?) tendon. Weird. I know

Also jumping on the spider phobia train. Hate them. The other day it was just me and LO and there was a spider. I had to be rationale about it but I was literally freaking out inside when I hate to kill it. Then it crunched. Yuk! :-S
  • I have a fear of swimming in lakes. If I can't see the bottom I panic and think something is going to grab my feet and pull me under.
  • Spiders. First time I drove by myself with DS in the car, I didn't notice till we were already going that a hugeass spider had built a web btw my windshield & antenna in the 2 wks I couldn't drive PP and was just hanging out there. I do not know how I didn't crash the car. I'm also afraid of driving over bridges, afraid I will lose control and go into the water in the car. The more often I have to deal with a bridge, the more comfortable I am worth it, but I still don't like it.
Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.

This terrifies me too. My subconscious has decided there are sharks in lakes and they're out to get me.

  • I love spiders! I've kept true spiders before, jumpers and widows.

Eye stuff is what freaks me out. I can't tolerate having my eye touched. When I go to the optometrist it takes a couple people to hold me down so they can put that poking thing in my eye. No contacts here!

Not a phobia now.... But when I was little I was scared to swim in the pool at night (even if the underwater lights were on). I thought a shark was going to come out of the drain in the bottom if the deep end.
  • I still jump into bed when the lights are out, I'm always afraid of "the monster" under the bed
My closet, an my kids closets have to be completely closed at night. Sometimes I even check after putting them to bed
My feet have to be covered and can absolutely never stuck out over the bed. Dh does this just to freak me out

Yup, I am an adult with 5 kids!

When I was taking swimming lessons as a kid they taught you to go under water by having a plastic shark taped to the pool wall that you'd have to dive and touch. I was convinced that it would become real and eat me so I'd swim like a mad woman when I had to pass it.

  • Thunder. I have been known to hide under the kitchen table when I am home alone. And whimper as well.

  • I'm terrified of mirrors in the dark. I think I got traumatized by the "Bloody Mary" legend as a child. I'll never have one in my bedroom for that reason.

And cheese. It freaks me out. For real.
  • @henderson1026 you can't leave us hanging with just ketchup! Lol

Mine is Dying, I have insane panic attacks to where I have had to pull over when I think into the fact that one day it WILL happen and there is nothing I can do about it. It's prob going to get worse since now I need to be here for LO. Live each day as if it was your last!! :D
  • I'm afraid of deer, and of falling backwards.

The deer thing I think stems from driving in the winter. I've never been in an accident, but I'm terrified that I'll be driving, the roads are slippery, and a deer will run out in front of me.  Completely terrifies me.

I don't know where the falling backwards thing is from, but I can't climb ladders, or go on a roller coaster, or climb stairs without this fear that I'm going to fall backwards.  Weird, I know.

  • Planes/flying. I will fly but need medication. If I don't take meds I'm a crying, anxiety attack mess.

I agree with PP. It's the lack of control. I also hate all the different noises.

  • @MyBaby2013 - it really grosses me out.  if a restaurant puts a cup on my plate i have to remove it asap and I hate touching it.

When I was a camp counselor, one of the kids chased me with a bottle and I was running and screaming and started crying.

I really hope LO doesn't turn into one of those kids who eats ketchup on everything.  I can't handle squirting it and washing it up every day ::shudders::

  • Night/dark. Being alone at night. I'm way better about it now, but I used to have to drug myself to stay alone in my house/apt overnight (having kids broke me of this bc I obv can't get drunk and take sleeping pills while caring for my child). I've never lived by myself.

Facing my fear (sober) is the thing that has helped the most.

  • Oh. Bears. I'm scared anytime I walk through a forest trail alone that a bear will appear. Although can that even be considered a phobia? Because really, who the fuck wouldn't be scared of a bear. But I guess it's an irrational fear given that the "forest" I walk in is in the middle of a city....
  • Spiders is my #1 fear. Can't even begin to describe the shit show I go through every time I encounter one.

Ok. How did you do this? I have the same fear. It's crippling. My H went hunting for a few days and I made my parents drive 6 hours to come stay with me. My brain goes psycho at night if I'm alone. I literally break into a sweat thinking someone is in the house.

  • Tour buses, airplanes, and elevators. I HATE the feeling of not being able to get out if I want to. I had to take a tour bus on a 10 hour trip before I knew it was a big deal and had a horrible reaction. I vomited and cried the whole way. It was awful. I don't know if it's a loss of control thing or what, but I can't deal.

I guess it's the same idea as the shark thing. Sharks themselves aren't really an irrational fear, but being scared of them in a pool or lake is. I still look around the pool when I swim laps, how embarrassing is that?

  • Needles...I have a very real, visceral, physical reaction. Pregnancy was a roller coaster and I was very well known at my office. My dad, one brother, uncle, and one cousin have the exact same thing. I'm so worried I passed it to LO.....

  • Snakes. I HATE them. I have panic attacks seeing them even if it's on tv or a picture. And if it's IRL?? Forget it. I'll spend the rest of the day crying in my bed. No joke. I haven't found any way at all to deal with it other than avoid them at all costs.

Sharks.... I can't, I just can't. And open water of any type goes along with this one. I'm absolutely terrified.

Uncooked chicken. Seriously. Freaks the crap out of me. I can touch it but only with gloves on.. The thought of it makes me cringe. The bleach comes out after it's been touched as well. Like a thorough good bleach job.

  • Mine is snakes too but I don't think as bad as @LaMuelen or@starshower22. If I see them I make rash decisions and scream, I also had to skip reading the posts, I may dream about them now. Pretty much all things that wiggle or slither, I can't handle
  • Now that half of you have said you're scared of snakes I have to admit that I have a 6' pet ball python, haha.

I always warn people when they come over though that he's there, just in a locked tank.

I can't stand raw chicken! Or any raw meat for that matter, but chicken is the worst. I never touch it with bare hands and I make sure to sanitize every inch of my counters and sink once I'm through with it. It totally grosses me out.

  • This might not compare to other phobias listed, but I get super anxious when I have to drive in a lane on the freeway that has those huge cement barriers that they use during construction. I am so afraid that I am going to hit it, or I am too close to it, etc.
