Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What were your best 1st birthday gifts?

Lurking from 9-12 months...

My DD is 10 months old, and I'm putting together a wish list on the toys r us website because family members are starting to ask me for 1st birthday gift ideas.  Right now I have some Melissa & Doug puzzles, some music toys, a few books, a toddler table/chairs set, a play kitchen, and a smartrike on the list.

What else would you suggest adding?  It's hard to think of things that she "might" like in the next 6-12 months!

Thanks ladies :)

Re: What were your best 1st birthday gifts?

  • My DD loves her play kitchen and play food that she got for her birthday. She liked them then and still likes them now. :)

  • We got DS this walker/riding truck.  He could only push it around for a while, which he loved doing, and eventually he got big enough to actually ride it.  He loves it!

    https://www.littletikes.com/kids-toys/easy-rider-truck

DS also got a tunnel similiar to this one. He loves this too.

    https://www.amazon.com/PlayHut-Playhut-6-Foot-Play-Tunnel/dp/B009R9GBIK/ref=sr_1_9?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1381666219&sr=1-9&keywords=playhut+tunnel

Word of caution the M&D puzzles - stay away from the ones that make noise. DS got the one with vehicles and the one with animals.  They make the most obnoxiously loud noices.  DS still plays with them from time to time, but I'm thinking I could probably make them disappear and he would never notice.

Haha!  Will take note of this...
  • Cozy coupe, DD loves hers!
  • Wagon! He is totally over the stroller but loves his radio flyer plastic wagon and will still go for walks in that

  • Loves her instruments and the crawl through tunnel (we got one with mesh top so she can see us and we can see her as she crawls through.

I hate the M&D noise puzzles too, you don't even have to line up the right animal for the sound to go off. Sometimes it'll be on the shelf and when DH walks by at like midnight he'll hear random cow or something. It gives him quite a jump lol

  • Our son got a Radio Flyer Pathfinder Red Wagon for his 1st birthday.  We got good pictures of him in the wagon at his 1st birthday and at my daughter's 1st birthday as well.  We get a lot of use out of it.  And when I go to mom meetups that I am hosting at a playground, I will tell other moms to look for the red wagon so that they can find me easily.

  • Fisher Price Little People Talking Zoo.  DD actually got it for Christmas when she was 10 months and played with it right away and still loves to play with her zoo at 20 months.  For her birthday her grandparents got her the Fisher Price Disney Princess Castle.  It's got the same principle as the zoo for the "talking" but it took a while for her to get into that, although now she plays with it almost as much as the zoo.

Oh jeez!  I'm not doing it with that kind of intention - people have been asking me nonstop for birthday ideas for the past 3 weeks, and I just thought it would be helpful for THEM to have some ideas to look at.  We aren't even having a birthday party for her because I don't think it's necessary.  Trust me, we aren't those kind of people...

ETA: We didn't even have wedding/baby showers because we lived over 1000 miles away from all of our friends and family at those times in our lives... And it didn't both me one bit!
  • DS loves his water table.  We will probably bring it indoors soon and put rice or corn for a sensory table.
  • swing if you have a place to put it

random clothes - I love when people pick out clothes for DD.  Always fun!

    Anything musical from Hohner Kids

    Anything from Melissa & Doug.

The worst were anything like Fisher Price that have annoying lights and/or loud sounds.  We got a couple LARGE FP and Vtech toys and I'm sorry, but they were exchanged.

  • Registering for a birthday is over the top.

My favorite gifts DD got were all the clothes.

So far hers seems to be the Melissa & Doug "Band in a Box" or various books.

DH and I got her a Kidkraft kitchen off CL for $60. She likes it but is still a bit short to really enjoy it yet.
  • Pottery Barn anywhere chair - DD absolutely loves having her own chair to climb into. She plays on it with her toys several times a day.

  • Thanks everyone!  This gave me some great ideas!

And again, to be clear, this isn't a "birthday registry" and I don't have any intention of using it like that.  We live in a tiny apartment right now because we recently moved to a new state, and our family members are concerned about getting DD gifts that she will love/use, but that we will also be able to physically fit into our space since we're kind of packed in already as it is.  She is the first grandchild on both sides of our families, and things could very easily get out of hand!  And I don't want to make anyone feel bad by taking half of what we get back to exchange it just because it doesn't fit in our small space :(

@SunAndRain - I agree, never too many books!  DH and I don't even purchase toys for her, but she has quite the library already :)

  • DD got a little wagon for her dolls that she loves to push around. We got her a tent with tunnel attachments and she loves to play in it.
  • My daughter loves her Elmo kitchen and play food that she got for her first birthday, and she still plays with it daily.  She also got a couple of books that we read every night, "Click Clack Moo, Cows that Type," and "Llama Llama Red Pajama."  We've put most of the other things away for her little sister due in January.

  • This wasn't a birthday gift, just something my mom brought over just because, but it's a tablet with a  two sided fabric surface that comes with these water pens. You fill the pens with water and they draw on it. It's nice for this time when they're just scribbling, and she can't mark up anything else. DD loves it. She likes it when we draw together. It's made by B.

You can put a floor trap thing on the bottom so younger kids can't fall out and then as she gets older she can ride herself.  DD1 loves it too, and she's 4.

  • We didn't do gifts, but also didn't do donations to a cause.
DD3 was born August 20th.  We were home in Canada for the summer and flew back to Miami on the 24th, after she turned 1.  We didn't want to haul gifts back to Florida with us.  We got her a leather chair that matches our living room set and at our cottage in Canada, we bough and built a large swing set in the yard.

I love the living room chair idea!
  • We have a VTech Alphabet Train that DS1 had gotten for his first Christmas that he loved and now DS2 loves.
Also - the Pottery Barn chair is great, DS2 just got his in the mail from his Aunt yesterday! And DS1 loves his to sit in and read.
Water table is great as well as are the crawl tunnel things, DS1 used to love his and I'm debating getting DS2 one, the trouble with it is the space if you are going to keep it in the house.

As for the 'registry' comments - I totally get where you are coming from. We live in FL and ALL of our relatives that would buy for our kids live in NY and they all ask what they can buy for them. They WANT ideas so we use Elfster on my side of the family - it's a site where you can create wish lists to make shopping easier on everyone. For DH's side, I created Amazon wish lists with the same items and just keep them updated as I see someone has purchased something.

This is in NO WAY a 'registry' - it is a helpful tool designed to make shopping easier on everyone.
