Running Question

I want to start running.  The last few nights after dinner I've taken my dog on a 1.5 mile run and love the "me time"

Can someone recommend some good running shoes for under $100?  The shoes I have now are Nikes but I've had them for at least 3 years.

Re: Running Question

  • I highly recommend finding a running store, like Sharona suggested.  I love Fleet Feet. The running stores do not always have great sales like other stores but always ask if they have your size in last year's styles.  I usually save about $30 that way.

  • I agree that you should go to a running store. I recently got a pair I love for $70 there.
  • My first running shoes were New Balance shoes and they were probably $90.  Make sure that whatever you do, you go to a running store and get fitted by an expert.  Shoes matter!

Also, remember that "running" can mean that you take regular walk breaks.  I have a beeping watching and I run one minute, walk one minute.  It's a great way to extend your time and distance without getting discouraged!
  • I have Asics and I lurve them.

  • I am a major fan of Asics Gel-Kayanos.  They are usually around $140, but you can often find the prior models for around $100.  I try to snag a new pair when I see them on sale because I try to replace mine every 6 months or so.

I actually just read an article that runners should choose based on comfort and that the whole thing with getting fitted by an expert was not necessary and just to sell more shoes.  I will try to find the article....

    Found it - I had read it in DH's Men's Journal :)

My latest pair and my favorite are my Brooks. I believe they were just over a hundred dollars but completely worth it. Like it was mentioned before, try to go to a running store to be fitted. It makes a ton of difference. They give you several different brands to try on and you choose what feels best for you.

When I was fitted, they emphasized that comfort is what matters most. They had me run down the street in like 12 different pairs of shoes, before I went with the saucony virrata. And before i was fitted I had always been running in whatever pair of shoes and felt fine. After running in my new shoes, I realize that the old shoes weren't as comfortable as I thought, because the new ones feel so much better. The fitting didn't help them sell me more shoes though. The whole reason I got the fitting in the first place was because I needed a new pair of shoes.
