Do you know Anna Arroyo? She's our tox fellow, and she's doing a research project with fentanyl patches. I know she's using some lab space over on campus, but I'm sure it's probably a huge place(s).
Your post about cocaine/addiction/etc reminded me of it.
Re: Amy
No I don't -- but my guess is that she's in the pharm/tox dept. I'm in the psychiatry dept, in the research building (as opposed to the clinical building).

Ah, ok. I wasn't sure how all that was "organized."
Do you know if there's anything new going on in the research world with schizophrenia? Someone I know has a daughter who was diagnosed about a year ago, so I try to pay a little extra attention to things I read about it.
I've admittedly been bad about keeping up with the latest literature in any area other than my own narrow one, at least recently... what with the clock ticking on my dissertation. Generally I don't know of any HUGE breakthroughs, but a lot of genetics work is trying to get at the cause(s) of it... it's pretty poorly understood, sadly.
One interesting thing I do read about a little more is dual diagnosis, though -- psychiatric condition with drug abuse. One of the members of my diss committee is an MD who does both clinical and basic research, and he's particularly interested in schizophrenia and nicotine addiction -- given that about 95% of schizophrenia patients are hardcore smokers. It's an interesting phenomenon. Not leading to any breakthroughs on treating the disease, though, unfortch.

My high school guidance counselor was a licensed mental health therapist who also worked in the Stress Center. She worked mostly with dual diagnosis groups. Interesting stuff.
Yeah, hehe...all the hospitals are going or have gone smoke-free on their campuses, and they're trying to do it for the psych units too. Um, that could get ugly. Of course, I know it's hard to always find staff to take people out to smoke, and sometimes a rogue patient will try to light something on fire...but still...
