BTDT: Travelling with twins

Assuming the babes were healthy when did you travel (air travel) with your twins. We flew from CA to Fl when she was 5 months and it was a breeze. Twins are due 5/13, but we'll induce on 4/28 if they haven't arrived. There is a family reunion in Maine (we live in CA) in July. My mom, dad, and sister are going as is most of my mom's family from around the globe that we don't see often. We'd fly together so we'd have a lot of hands....but am I just kidding myself with even considering it? I wouldn't fly until they'd had their first round of shots.

Re: BTDT: Travelling with twins

  • I haven't flown with my two, but I guess for the ages of the babies for your timeline, I would guess some of the stress would depend on whether you are planning to EBF, etc. If you will have more help, it may not be so bad.
I would recommend putting them in their carseats to help them be more comfortable for that long of a flight, and so you have somewhere safe and clean to put them down and give your arms a break.

  • We flew with them at 4 months. We bought a seat for DS and carried DD (we alternate each trip). The airport was a pain, but the flight was fine. They've flown 4 times now!

  • I'm one of those crazy moms...I flew to visit my family with all three (DD was then 23 months) when my twins were a month old. We live in New England and my entire family is in the Seattle area. My mom and a friend flew with me since DH couldn't. It wasn't that bad, the boys were happy and just wanted to nurse or sleep with their paci's the whole time. I carried one in our Moby and my Mom held the other in our Ergo. DD wiggled a little, but she slept for most of it and knew what was going on (lots of snacks and a few new toys and coloring books helped!) since I've flown with her cross country quite a bit.

I wouldn't have attempted it so soon if I didn't have the help or if I hadn't made it to 37 weeks with them.

Glad I'm not the only one crazy enough to consider it. We'd definitely buy at least one seat for one of them and we'd have extra bodies...DD (who will be almost 3) would be completely content to sit with her grandparents and pretend we didn't exist. And DD has flown tons of times and is pretty pro at it.

  • We will be attempting a 4 hour flight next month when they are just 2 months old. Not sure how much help we'll have (inlaws May or may not be flying out with us). And we have a 5 year old, but she's an expert traveller.

  • I think it would be fine as long as everyone is healthy, the twins were able to take a bottle or paci (for take off and landing) and you have at least as many adults as kids. Just allow yourself about an hour extra from when you think you have to be at the airport, security takes a long time with babies, even with the fast pass lane. We flew with my kids ages 8, 11, and 10 month old twins and just us as adults. My bigs are pretty well behaved though. Oh and also make sure all the adults are able to have a lap infant in their seat, and remember you can't have both babies in the same row unless you have bought a seat for him/her. Good luck!

  • We still haven't flown with them, and are nervous to.
