Weight gain concern?

I've gained at most 2lbs since my first appointment and I'm curious as to what they are going to say at my 12 week appointment tomorrow? Today I am 12 weeks. Has anyone's DR given them a limit to stay under as for poundage each week? I need scales in my house!

AND going to the bathroom has been a once in a two week kind of thing. Very seldom.

  • 2 lbs in the first trimester doesn't seem like a huge concern to me.

  • 2 pounds in 12 weeks sounds perfect to me. I believe they say about 1 to 3 pounds in the first tri so you're right in there. I have actually lost a pound at 15 weeks and my dr said they don't really worry too much about gaining enough until after 20 wks

  • I don't want to be gaining too much too fast. I just wasn't sure what the "right" amount was.
  • The guideline is 1-2 lbs per week so you have a nice gradual weight increase.  My doc only yelled at me once in my 3rd trimester when I put on 6 lbs in 2 weeks, but really there's not much you can do about it and dieting is a no no.

  • Thanks everyone! I feel better
  • I'm 15 weeks and haven't gained any and my OB is (mildly) concerned about that, so you're at least one step ahead of me there.

  • My doc gave me hell for gaining 9lbs in a month from 8-12 weeks but I blame it on water and the fact that I wasn't pooping normally (tmi sorry). I have lost about 6lbs and go back for my 16w appt tomorrow so we shall see. Last appt was in the afternoon and this one I scheduled for 7:45am. :-)
  • I almost immediately gained 7 lbs when I started talking progesterone. Then jumped another 7 lbs over weeks 6-12. I think I'm starting to even out since I've stopped progesterone. Let's hope anyway!
  • I'm on the thinner end and lost weight from my 8 to 12 week appt. my doc mentioned it but wasn't concerned after I assured him I was eating like a trucker, and baby is still growing. He never mentioned my weight last time... But I didn't gain much. I figure it's not a problem till he says it's a problem.

  • I gained 5lbs at my 14w visit. I had gained, 5lbs at the 10w, dropped 2lbs the next week and then gained the 2 back. My OB was mildly concerned I lost the weight.

It's also more concerning to drop or gain a significant amount in a short period of time. 2lbs is nothing!

  • My OB made me meet with a nutritionist yesterday. She said a weight gain of 2-4lbs during the first tri is ideal (I gained 7). I'm pretty sure at least a 1lb of that is sh*t because only go once a week lol. She also said the goal is for me to gain a 1lb a week for the entire pregnancy and I need to be consuming 2500 calories a day for my height and weight (5'9 157lbs). So your 2lbs sounds perfect to me : ) keep up the good work.
  • 14 weeks and 4 pounds for me. You're definitely fine.

  • Lol I'm 14 weeks and up 11 pounds!
  • I'm 13 weeks today and up 5 pounds -- just at the very top limit for the first trimester.  I asked my doctor about it and he said not to worry about gaining too much -- "it's better to have ten extra pounds to lose after the baby's born than to undergain while you're pregnant."  I was at the very low end of the healthy range pre-pregnancy, so I think it makes sense that I'd gain more early on.  (I also had hardly any morning sickness, which helped!)

  • Are you concerned it is too much or too little? Some women don't gain anything in first tri and some gain 10 lbs or more. There's a huge range of "normal" for first trimester or even the first 20 weeks. Weight gain concerns are usually if you're reaching the 35 lb pretty quickly or you start showing signs of/get diagnosed with GD/preeclampsia but otherwise as long as you're eating appropriately and baby's development is appropriate there shouldn't be concern.

  • I've gained a total of 2 lbs at my 13 week appt. She seemed happy with that.
  • Everyone will vary a bit. I was up 6 pounds (from pre-preg but OB didn't know this) until my bloodwork appt at 11 weeks. Then felt a bit better (laid off the carbs a bit and could work out) and lost 4.5 of them. So when I went back at 13 weeks she was a little surprised I lost but I explained why and it made perfect sense. =) From here on I'll gain though! Don't stress unless its a huge weight gain in one week. More than a coulple pounds in a week may be cause for concern IMO, not in a month.

  • Your weight is fine but u need to get the Pooping under control. Talk to your dr about that it can't be good to only once every two weeks. I go once a day. Something's not right.
  • I'm confused.  Are you concerned about NOT gaining enough?  2lbs is quite normal for a singleton pregnancy.  When you get to 13 in 13.... then they might have a little chat with you..

  • Also... as for the pooping.  Try colace.  I needed to take it 2x a day everyday in order to go.  It is safe and so much easier than suffering though constipation

I have gained 15. No lie. Last pregnancy I gained 50. I don't know how I've gained so much so far to be honest! I've been eating a lot but not junk. I think my body just gains a lot during pregnancy!! If anyone is concerned it should be me. I do plan to mention it to my doctor but I'm not worried. I lost all the weight last time (thank you Weight Watchers) and was back to less than my pregnancy weight of 135 (got down to 120)....I delivered at 187!!! So....2 lb ain't no thang.
@homediva I am in almost the same boat! I have gained 10 lbs since I found out I was pregnant. I was also on WW before and lost about 25 lbs ( I was still not at my ideal weight when I found out I was pregnant). I am now up 10 and my doctor had told me I should try not to gain more than 15. I saw the nurse yesterday and she didn't seem to concerned about it so I am trying not to worry but definitely will try to be more careful with the carbs.
