Switching to a toddler bed

When do you plan on switching to a toddler bed or converting your crib? If I switched it for my DD, I know she'd get out of bed and do all sorts of shenanigans. It's nice to have her confined in the crib now. I have baby #2 coming in Feb. I guess I could have them in a separate crib for now, but just seeing if there are other ideas out there.

My kids are almost 22 months apart and are both still in a crib. DS1's crib converts to a toddler bed so I figured I would rather get a new crib for DS2 and let DS1 use his crib until he is ready for the change and convert his bed into a toddler bed. That should last him until he is 4 maybe? We have a twin bed in his room now but he sleeps great in his crib so no reason to rock the boat.

We had a long thread last week about switching to a toddler bed. Anne was the OP and it said something like "Interesting advice from Pedi" as the subject.

#2 is due in Dec, but I expect her to spend about 5 months in our bedroom like Sophia did... that means in April/May ish we'll decide if Sophia is ready for a toddler bed or if we need to spring for another crib... she'll be 20 months at that point, and we should have bought a house by then so they'll have their own rooms, so I'll probably try to do the toddler bed then, even if I have to baby-gate the door of her bedroom to contain her.

It would feel weird giving #2 a $100 crib after Sophia had an heirloom quality one, that I had really intended for all of our kids to use, but if we have to buy a second crib, we will.
  • I should have added, the perks of a $100 crib is that you can use it for a few months until the oldest is a little more ready for a toddler bed, and then hand down the crib. If you only spent $100ish on it, and especially if your first crib is a really nice one, NBD to just trade them out :)

Mine are 21 months apart. We bought a second crib b/c DS was still in his crib at the time.

We would have bought a second crib anyway though b/c his crib converts to toddler bed & then to a full sized bed, so he will be using it for the foreseeable future.

We converted DS's crib to a toddler bed just after he turned 2, FWIW, which is when he was consistently climbing out.

Ah, I'm dumb... yeah that makes a lot of sense.
  • We thought about transitioning DD when DS came to get the crib.  Then I thought about all of the newborn sleepless nights plus dealing with transitioning a toddler.  Then I cried.  Then I said NO WAY.

Now DS totally sleeps through the night.  I still say NO WAY.
