Did anyone NOT interview/meet their pedi?

Re: Did anyone NOT interview/meet their pedi?

  • For me personally, I didn't see the point of interviewing the pediatrician before the baby came.  I asked friends with kids for recommendations and also did research of reviews online.  If I had been dissatisfied with the pediatrician I chose after LO's first checkup, I would have just switched to a different one at that point.  I'm not sure how you can really judge a pediatrician without seeing how he/she interacts with your LO and how he/she handles your questions and concerns.

  • If you are the least bit crunchy at all, I would interview if you can. I am so tired of being yelled at for something everytime we go in. It's annoying. I'm going to make sure DD is developmentally on track, not for parenting advice (and certainly not for parenting advice I don't agree with, like CIO with a 4 month old baby or starting solids before 6 months). His nurse had a complete fit over BLWing, and he tried to guilt me into putting DD in her crib from day 1 (and I didn't even tell him we bed-shared).

It didn't bother me at first, and I wasn't going to switch over it, but he doesn't like dealing with kids with medical problems, so it is just 2 reasons to switch now.

I don't think any of the things you listed are really "crunchy". We have seen several different pedis and all of them recommended waiting until at least 6 months for solids, making sure you pick up your newborn when they cry and waiting on any type of sleep training until they are ready, which depends on the baby. Most of these were pretty old school type pedis. I think you just have a crappy pedi because most of those things aren't crunchy. But I do think if you have strong views on vaccinations, sleep training, or other practices then interviewing might be a good idea. Personally, I have never heard of interviewing a pedi until TB.
  • We had one picked out based upon recommendations from friends. We interviewed her and I wasn't super impressed, but figured I caught her on an off day. In the hospital the on call pediatrician was awesome and had amazing bedside manner, had 4 young kids, and was very laid back. We ended up choosing him and have been so happy.

  • We didn't because he is going to the Family Practice that H and I go to.  He gets seen by my doctor, but if she is out he'll go to H's or any of the other staff and we've met all of them.

They didn't come to the hospital, we had a pediatrician from another facility check him out 2 times while we were there.  I didn't like the guy so that just confirmed that we made the right decision for who we wanted seeing him.
  • We didn't meet ours. She was recommended by a few different coworkers. I figure if we don't like her we can always switch docs.
  • There is a big practice in my town that is only peds. They do rounds at the hospital and we just picked the one we liked most out of the ones we saw.
