LO scared of my dad

LO cries almost every time my Dad comes near her. She's scared of him. He's Norwegian, so he has an accent. If he's boisterous with her, I can see why she would get scared. But he's tried talking sweetly to her, which works sometimes but not always. He wants so badly to be close to her that it makes me sad. She sees him maybe once every 3 weeks or so. I'm sure if she saw him more regularly, it wouldn't be so much of an issue. I'm also sure that with time, she won't cry anymore. It just breaks my heart seeing him try to get close to her, and her crying :( Not sure there's anything I can do about it either right now.

Re: LO scared of my dad

  • My LO is like that with almost very one right now :( if you are not me or DH do not try and hold her and 50% of the time don't talk to her or she will lose it!!! Hoping its a phase.... I do notice the more often they are around the more comfortable they are.... Can he be in the same room talking to someone else happily so she gets used to the accent (lol don't let him look at her during it)?

It makes me sad too becuz we are visiting family that she hasn't met yet (and might not see for a while) and she will not let them near her :( they even try & play baby games and she won't even smile at them :( but if she is with me super happy, smiles, cuddles, etc.

  • Around this age stranger anxiety can really start to kick in. Children tend to be more scared of boys than girls too. Hopefully this phase won't last too long for her :-/

  • I'm so sorry and don't have a lot do advice. Brayden is scared of my FIL and he sees him twice a week. He is from the south & has a think country accent. Sometimes his tone is loud and harsh. I feel like Brayden's coming around a little more but he still cries sometimes FIL walks in the room

  • My daughter was scared of my dad when she was little. Now they are inseparable. Give it time. Everything is new to your LO plus separation anxiety. It will get better!

  • Dd1 was frightened of FIL for a while. He tried coming in quietly, he tried chatting to her from a distance, he tried talking to her while I was cuddling her. It just took time. Now they are besties. It's a hard phase, sending you and your dad lots of love!

  • My DD cries when anyone tries to talk to her or look at her. Don't even try to hold her. She only likes me and can tolerate my DH about 50% of the time. Even if I am standing right next to the person holding her including DH she is not happy.

  • Sometimes my dad is a little over bearing with my LO at first. They live in IL and we live in FL so when my parents sees him, my dad just gets really excited. He will take him and talk to him and smile and tickle him all within a matter of minutes. My son will start crying sometimes bc he's like "wth, who are you?!" My dad can be over bearing at times bc he suffers from ADHD. It's all in good fun but I just have to tell my dad to take it easy. After a couple of hours they are playing together like they've known each other for years :)

This is us exactly. When someone comes near her and tries talking to her, I cringe because I'm afraid she's going to cry. On the rare occasion that she actually smiles at someone, I'm ecstatic! Majority of the time she has such a serious face when we're out in public, but at home she's so smiley.
