Are you using toothpaste for LO?

I think Kate will swallow it, so I haven't used it yet. Just water on her brush. My husband Googled and said the norm seems to be 18 months. But she has so many teeth now I am wondering if we should start. Tell me what you do, please. If most are using it, I will follow the herd. But only if it's organic and non mac & cheese flavored.

Re: Are you using toothpaste for LO?

  • Hahaha.. We use the "swallow-able" toothpaste.  And yes, she swallows the majority of it lol
Thanks, I didn't know there was swallow-able. I guess I should get on this parenting thing and start doing a little research.

  • We use Earths Best infant toothpaste. Just a pea size morning and night.
  • No, not yet, just getting her used to brushing with water.  DD has two teeth on the bottom and two sort of half-teeth on the top, so not many to brush yet anyway.

  • Just water here still. Not sure when we'll switch. DD has 8 front teeth and one molar so far.

  • We do water only. My ped said you don't need to start using toothpaste until 18 - 24 months.
  • We use orajel toothpaste. He still swallows it. I don't think I moved Nene to a regular toothpaste till 2/2.5

  • We do the swallowable as well. He wants everything we have so I give it to him when I brush my teeth. It's pretty cute.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • Ugh, forget paste, she won't have anything to do with the brush, much less paste. I tried modeling because she copied at first but now she just wants to suck on my toothbrush and throw hers on the floor or brush MY teeth for me and clam up when we try to do hers. It's the worst part of my day.

  • I use the "trainer" toothpaste most of the time but sometimes I use just a tiny smidge of the kids flouridated toothpaste.  I'm talking the tinyest smear on the brush.  He does swallow it but I figure a tiny bit once in a while won't harm him any.

  • Since he got a molor in, we've been using training toothpaste. I don't remember the brand but it's fluoride free, berry flavor.

  • We use Earth's Best at night. She has 11 teeth.

  • We use the "training" toothpaste. He hates it. Usually it ends up on his hand or the counter anyway, so I've gone back to water, which he hates a little less.  Unless he is chewing on it himself or putting it in the faucet, he wants nothing to do with his toothbrush.

  • We just do water on a washcloth. He has 13 teeth now, 8 fully out and 5 that broke through the gums about 2 weeks ago.

We are using baby toothpaste.  My dentist said it is important to get toothpaste without fluoride before they are 2.  I guess the fluoride can damage their teeth prior to 2.

DD pretty much just eats whatever toothpaste I put on the brush.

  • We use the kind he can swallow that came with his toothpaste. I think he likes to brush his teeth because if the flavor.
  • I use the the toddler training paste made by Orajel. It's fluoride free and safe if swallowed. I use less than a pea size and get one good swipe across his teeth before he takes the brush anyhow.

  • we also use the toddler training toothpaste.
  • Yes. The Aquafresh infant one. Been doing this for a while, never seemed to bother him. We only use a small pea-sized amount.

  • I have been using a kids toothpaste called theodent that my dentist recommended. I just dab a very small amount on Jeffrey's teeth when he is taking a bath and try to brush his teeth then. I am pretty sure that he eats it - it is chocolate flavored and on a couple of occasions, he almost had a fit because he wanted more!
Yum, I want chocolate flavored toothpaste.
  • Sometimes we use just water, sometimes we use the Orajel stuff.  She's got 8 teeth so far!
  • Ugh, forget paste, she won't have anything to do with the brush, much less paste. I tried modeling because she copied at first but now she just wants to suck on my toothbrush and throw hers on the floor or brush MY teeth for me and clam up when we try to do hers. It's the worst part of my day.
@NeneCakies My DD struggled with this in the beginning, too. We tried this (clicky). You can use it like you would a spoon, at least to start. We would mash up bananas (a favorite food) and dab the brush into it before offering it to her like we would a bite of food. Once she had it in her mouth we would wiggle it around a little bit to mimic the brushing motion. It didn't take long for her to enjoy it and now she LOVES to brush her teeth, she'll even use the sign for it when she wants to. Maybe it's worth a shot.

  • @PurrCrasher the link didn't work but I'm intrigued by what you describe. Maybe we could do something like that with her brush to make her like it. Hmmm.

Also, thank you so much for offering a solution. I was at my wits end with this.

  • @NeneCakies just search for "Nuk brush". It's basically a little rubber nub on the tip of a handle that is used for various things but is great for kiddos with oral sensory issues (like my DD). It took a little patience but it really helped her come around to it.
