Christmas trees and one year olds...

Yes, I'm thinking ahead to December. I'm trying to decide if I want to mess with a tree at all this year. For those of you who have past experience with Christmas trees and two one year olds, please tell me your experience. Was it a hassle? Were you constantly saying "no"? Any advice you care to share?

Totally stalking this thread....MIL and I were talking about this the other day. LOs are already tearing everything apart; I can only imagine how they're gonna be as 1-year-olds at Christmastime!

I can't talk about 2 1-year olds, but last year DD was about 16 months old. Walking and getting into everything. She was never alone in the room with the tree and really she got pretty bored with it after a while. We bought a bunch of soft/nonbreakable ornaments, but ones I still really liked and loaded up the tree with those. We didn't put on our really nice, breakable, glass ornaments. She pulled a few off, but after a few days it wasn't a novel toy anymore.

We didn't however leave any wrapped presents under the tree until christmas eve because those she would have gotten into and ripped open.

I got tons of ornaments from West Elm last year...looked great on our tree and lots of non-breakable ones to choose from. I'll be getting more this year.

We did similar to legaleagles. I did put some glass balls but they were all up high. The bottom of the tree had wood ornaments only. But the novelty wears off and they stop paying any attention to it after a few days! Oh, and no tinsel or garland...one tug and the tree can come down!

So glad you posted this bc DH and I were just discussing. I'm totally for a tree (it just isn't Christmas without it front and center for me). He's all about putting it in some random part of the house lol. I'm also glad to hear that so far most seem to say the novelty wears off quickly.....definitely going to watch for more replies!

Not sure you'll know til you put it up. We had it in the corner kind of blocked off by our couch and love seat kind of kitty cornered together to block it. It didn't matter because the first 2 years my kids hated the feel of the needles and literally cringed when they touched it so it wasn't an issue.

last year, we put the tree in the dining room. The living room was corralled in with two superyards connected to each other. I also only hung non-breakables and non-sentimentals on it. I had way more trouble with our housecat trying to destroy it.

This won't be an issue for us this year, but good to know for next year. I'm already yelling at my cat to not drink the tree water, so what's two more.

Depends a whole lot on the kid. #1 pulled the whole tree down, #2 never touched it. Based on #3/4, we will put it behind the super yard, I ain't got the time to keep them away and they are into everything else, don't think this will be different!

I agree with pp. depends on the kid my first never touched it and he was 11 months old his first Christmas. My twins won't be an issue this year as they are due on Christmas Day but my c-section is for December 11 so they will be too small to care. But the super yard I will keep in mind in case my boys are hands on.

Not sure which way we'll go, but I know when we were very little, my parents did a small tree and put it up on a table so we couldn't reach it. We wound up doing the same when our dog was a puppy, and even though it's completely different, that worked well for us too.

I'm not sure on the twins side of things, but I'm really glad I had one when my girls were crawling. Madeleine (the one who is 10 now) crawled under the tree and was just looking up wide eyed at the lights. I got the most amazing picture. That memory alone is worth the trouble of keeping an eye on a toddler and a crawler

Again though, this was with girls 18 months apart. I'm not sure on the twin side of things..

Our twins will be 16 months come December and we have a smaller house. The boys play in the living room and that's also the only place to put a tree. My husband and I agreed that 's going to be a Charlie Brown tree this year, somewhere small on a table, somewhere up high!
