Babies: 9 - 12 Months

XP: BLW concerns

DD is 7.5 months and it's been a month an half since we started BLW. My concern is that she's not chewing down what she bites off, she just keeps them in her mouth and keeps taking more bites. We've tried giving her only one piece of food (like a stick of carrot). At the end of meal time we give her water in a cup (we hold it for her) and lots of stuff comes out, pouring into the cup that she's holding onto in her mouth. I'm just wondering when she'll learn to chew what she bites off and also concerned that she'll choke if we don't catch whatever is in her mouth when she lays down..She also hates us digging in her mouth for the pieces.

I appreciate any advice you guys may have...
thanks!

  • They do eventually learn how to chew. At 7.5 months they are still learning! Give it some time! My son was like that and he got the hang of chewing shortly after that age. Now he's a champ. Just keep and eye on her and relax. Stressing out about intake and such takes out all the fun of BLW. She'll figure it out, trust me!

thank you! I'm trying to relax but when half an hour after meal time I find stuff in her mouth I worry that she may still have food in her mouth that I may not catch and she may choke if she laid with it in her mouth and fell asleep...
  • That could happen regardless of how you feed them. It gets worse too! My toddler wen through a phase around 18-22 months where she would hamster cheek food and just chew things for hours and then spit it out! Babies are weird. I would say that if you just do a quick check after meals you'll be fine. We don't and sometimes we'll take him up for a change and he'll still have a piece of dinner in his mouth. He's fine though.

  • Yup, we still find random pieces of food some nights, but she's never choked.  We started BLW a week before she turned 6 months, and her swallowing of food got much better between 7 and 8 months.  And nana is right, this isn't necessarily a BLW problem, they'll do it with anything.  If you're really concerned, dig in his mouth and make sure it's cleaned out.  Of course he won't like it, but oh well.  DD hates diaper changes, but I still do them :P
  • We started BLW at 6 months and DD didn't really swallow any food for the first 3-4 weeks. The first couple months I could only give her one piece of food at the time or she would try to put everything in her mouth at once and would just end up spitting everything out. Keep offering her food, she'll get it eventually and in the mean time check her mouth after meals.
