Neighbor's incessantly barking dogs...

Hello ladies. My next door neighbor has two dogs that bark nonstop all day! Ugh, I love dogs but I *hate* when they bark all the time! When the LO arrives, I'm anxious that they will keep her awake and make her cry. Should I have a talk with the neighbor/leave a note? Other moms know how to do deal with this dreadful noise? I'm at my wits end :(

  • Call the city ..... there are noise ordinances.

  • I would talk to them, if they don't do something to stop it then call the city.

  • On a side note, you'll be surprised what babies sleep through and what wakes them up. I've always heard stories that from the beginning you should run the vacuum in their room while they are sleeping and in general don't tiptoe around a sleeping baby that way they get used to sleeping through noise.

  • Talk to them first. The last thing you want is the city sending them a notice or fine and through public records them finding out who complained. Like PP said. They might have no clue their dogs bark that much. Make sure you know the ordinances before chatting with them to head off any confusion also! Most city/county's have "quiet times" and then outside those time frames it is all fine lines of whether or not the barking dog actually breaks the ordinances! Good luck hope you get it sorted before LO arrives!!
  • You can talk to them as a first step and call the city as a second, but since I've had DD, I've lived in places with lots of barking dogs and nothing to be done about it during the day. All the houses around mine have dogs and they ALL bark obnoxiously (I don't allow my dogs to bark like that so it drives me crazy) and they've never bothered DD (she was 7 mo old when we moved here) and her window is closest to the worst barkers.
If you can't do anything about the barking dogs, you could try some white nose to mute other sounds.

We have such a dog issue on our "street", and it's really tricky, because the dogs belong to my bosses. Right across the street is an incessant barker. She's off at "boarding school" right now, but it's to become a better hunting dog, and, I actually said this to my boss, that is not what she needs to be working on! (She is also a jumper, and is a HUGE 60-70 pound lab.). And my other boss, her husband adopted a dog who is an evil terrible scary biter. We have talked about it as a community, but they are convinced that he's been "cured" because now he only occasionally jumps at people, and rarely actually makes contact. Totally reassuring, right?

ETA: The funny thing about the barking dog is that this boss also has this sweet 14 year old retriever who he "inherited" when he got married a couple years ago (His wife works 3 hours away, so she is only here on weekends), and when I've brought up the barking, he insists that it's this old dog. Yet, it's been perfectly quiet since his other dog has been away. But since this other dog is his pride and joy, this purebred he's invested thousands of dollars in, he just won't acknowledge the issue.

  • Babies will sleep through anything. Be as noisy as you can! Vacuum, tv, music, talk loud! You want her to be able to sleep through.

But yes, talk to the neighbor about it.
