Success after IF

Kicking the bottle

For the life of me, I cannot get E to drink milk out of anything other than a bottle.  She won't drink it out of a sippy, straw cup, or open cup.  She will drink water, and a rare juice treat out of a straw, sippy, or open cup.  But milk = bottle only for her.  Any suggestions?

  • I had this problem until I tried a straw cup that was just a regular lidded cup with a regular straw, not the anti-spill kind. Apparently she didn't want to have to work hard for milk and all of the spill proof cups required her to suck hard to get the milk out. Take n Toss makes some that are just like the kid cups they give in restaurants. I also have to use different types of cups for water and milk so she knows what she's getting. Good luck!

  • @ELF4321 I actually bought the take n tosses based on your recommendation.  She will drink water or juice out of them, no milk.

  • I have none here. I made the switch in a day. It just took me figuring out what cup he liked. He will never take milk from a straw so a reg sippy it is. But you could try cold turkey and just only offer the sippy cup. And since your lo likes the nipple on the bottle - why not try the soft tip sippy cup by advent. My son loved that cup. And we started with that first.

  • Does she drink cold milk out of a bottle? I know it may seem strange, but even if she takes cold milk from a bottle, she might prefer room temperature or warmer milk from a cup (just stick it in the microwave for a few seconds to take the chill off). V gave up the bottle on his own, but he still to this day has some strange temperature/texture aversions.

  • Nope, she still requires the milk to be warmed up before drinking out of a bottle.  But still won't drink it out of a sippy, even warm.

Could this be because we are still nursing?

  • I wish I knew! We are having the same problem. I tried a fancy straw bottle that resembled DS's glass bottles, and he took the milk into his mouth and then let it all dribble out. He refused to swallow it from the straw bottle. Once I put the milk into the regular bottle, he sucked it down happily.

My next idea is to try a sippy cup top on a lifefactory glass bottle since that is the closest I can get to his dr brown glass bottle without it being the bottle with a nipple.

DS loves his milk in a bottle, pure and simple. And I feel a little bit bad about taking them away.

  • TJ, even if you weren't nursing, you would have the same problem, I think. E is used to milk either coming out of a boob or a boob substitute, and both are pretty comforting.

  • Same here!  E will take one sip, let it pour out of her mouth, then throw the cup at me.  If I try to hand it back, she violent shakes her head no, no, no!

  • Advice I've heard is to throw out all bottles from your house and have her watch you do it. Take a few days to let her get used to the idea....like plan a bottle tossing party. Let her toss them in the garbage. Take the garbage out. If she wants milk she then either needs to drink from what you have or breast feed. That said, I haven't lived through that so it may be rotten advice. But it's what I've heard works. You also then can't cave without going to the store.

Are you only nursing? If so I definitely think it could add to it but if on a bottle - just being picky I guess
