Taking away the pacifier

My son is 6 months old.  FTM here.  When should I start taking away the pacifier?  He was born 6 weeks early, so really he is only 4.5 months.  He really only uses it for about 2-3 minutes before falling asleep at night and to get him going in the car seat.  Lately during the day he takes it out of his mouth and plays with it.  What do you think?

Re: Taking away the pacifier

  • No reason to take it away, especially if it is a useful tool. Your LO will not go to college with it. I drank out of a bottle (juice, water, etc) until I was in kindergarten. I appear to be okay:)

DS doesn't take a soother & I'm glad for it
  • I wouldn't worry about it now. DS2 only uses one for sleeping, too, and not 100% of the time. I'll probably ditch it at a year.
  • Honestly, I don't understand why people worry about this so young. Before a year old, it wouldn't even cross my mind to try taking away the pacifier. If it helps, why take it away?

I used a pacifier occasionally until I was 3 years old, and I don't really care if that's what happens with my DD. She is very attached to it at this point for sleeping and calming down when she's upset. I do think that as they get older, it should be limited to bedtime.... I don't like seeing toddlers/preschool-aged children walking around with pacifiers in their mouths out in public. But I am in no way worrying about taking it away yet.

I think as long as LO is only using it to soothe at bedtime you shouldn't stress yet. When they get too dependent on it and want it all day, that's when I would start thinking about weaning him off. I especially think it's useful is young because LO does not get blankets at night. This is something that is safe for him and comforts him, I say go for it.
