    I'm torn on the pink topic. I like that it had created awareness, but we should be teaching/preaching healthy habits and exercise- things that can lower your risk. I'm also not a fan of the dual language gear. It is sickening to think that America needs a gimmick to get people to support something.

    I also wonder if the NFL players and staff have to make a donation for the pink gear they sport? I kind of picture a large bin where players and staff can grab stuff to wear. Who pays for all that stuff?

    In my mind if your child of any age is receiving candy from strangers you have to give candy to strangers. It's very communist of me.

    To weigh in on the Pink debate on sports. DH was a professional baseball player they had days where they wore special pink jerseys and after the game they signed them and they were auctioned off. They can't put a percentage number on because the jerseys or other gear sell for different amounts. Like DH isn't a super star so his jersey was like $500 but another guys was $5000. The cost of the jersey to be made and expenses (just for easy math sake) is $100. So 80% of DHs jersey went to the charity. But 98% of the super stars jersey went to charity. Same fixed costs but different sale amounts. Also, they invite charities to set up at the park where you can get info or make donations plus they give tons of free tickets to survivors and families. I don't know how the NFL does theirs but I'd bet it's fairly similar. Please don't hold me to those dollar amounts, it was just an example.

    Exactly. Our neighbors have a 10 month old. The mom asked if we wanted to take M trick or treating with them. We were like, uhhhhh no. Not only are they taking their baby trick or treating, but they are driving to a different town (about a 25 minute drive) to go to a neighborhood that has really big, expensive houses and banking on getting better candy from there. We are pretty good friends with our neighbors, but we are totally side-eyeing them on this one.

    Wow lol I would be side eyeing them too! DH and I aren't taking DD trick or treating until she's a little older, we are taking her to the church fall festival this year. I kind of want to stay home and just watch Halloween movies but my family wants to see her...

    I donate to them regularly, but this makes me so. friggin. mad. The wasteful campaign spending for one, and all the money literally being thrown in the trash for another. Grr.

    Yes! I love coffee. When I do spend 5 bucks it is probably Starbucks which I go to once in a while...I really want a pumpkin spice latte now.

    Yep that's one of the things I look for - how they run their campaigns. That's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard of a charity doing though. I don't mind the mailing labels or t-shirts for running in a marathon, etc. - those are such minor costs. But I do look at how much the charity spends on administrative needs.

    And for goodness sakes do not give to United Way or through the Combined Federal Campaign or some other employee giving program like that. The campaign takes a percentage of your donation to run the campaign - just give directly to the charity of your choice so they get 100% of the dollars you give! ::Off soapbox now::


    The nickel tactic is because many people who receive the nickel then feel like they "owe" the nonprofit something in return, even though they didn't ask for it in the first place. Then they write a check. It doesn't work on most people but it may work on enough prospective donors to cover the cost of all the nickels and then some.

    I work in nonprofit communications.

    And I never respond to direct mail campaigns. ;)

    I don't either. I think it sometimes smells good but hate the taste.

    So what if you had to have a long engagement? We were engaged for a year and a half before we got married because we were planning our wedding from afar and didn't have much of a choice. Sure we could have gotten married where we live, but then nobody would have been able to attend because none of our family lives near us. We opted to have our wedding where half our family lives so only half would have to travel, and that required a lot of coordination, none of which could have been done in a shorter time frame...

    Those are the people who deserve to come home and have egg on their windows. Well not really, but seriously don't bring your kids out if you aren't giving out. Even if you have to give your candy to someone else to hand out, give something. I saw a woman last year turn her lights out as she was taking her kids out to get treats. It wouldn't be very fun if we all did that.

    Also, I do not donate to anyone in a store, to anyone who comes to my door or anyone who calls me. I research certain organizations that I want to donate to and after checking where their money goes I send what I choose, when I choose.

    As for coffee, I hate coffee and tea. If I am tired I can drink coffee with a chaser of water or juice...and that coffee would be mostly cream. Tea is something I can't even force myself to drink.

    EDIT to add, I also hate beer (even specialty or flavoured), I hate wine and I don't even really like champagne. (even the good stuff) I do like Vodka.

    Me & DH were engaged for 4 years and dated for another 3 so we didn't get married until 7 years later. We probably waited that long because we were so young when we got together (18 & 20) and knew we werent ready at the time. Now this is our 10th year together.

    Lol......A year and a half isn't a long engagement. I was engaged for about that long. Planning a wedding takes time.  I'm talking 4, 5 + years.

    @mommacakes4u - I also HATE coffee...the taste, the smell.  There is nothing that can be added that will make me like it.  My sister worked at a coffee shop when we were in college.  She would come home smelling of coffee, it made me gag.

    An engagement should definitely only last as long as it takes to plan. You should set a date within a month or so of getting the ring. And, there should always be a ring. Doesn't have to be a diamond but a ring should be involved. I got married five months after we were engaged and the planning was done within three months, totally doable. I even did my own flowers. I do get wanting to get married during a certain season, so your engagement might be longer.

    One can't do both.

    I have seen what PP suggested or some people leave a note directing you to the house next door where they will give you their candy as well.

    If I am going to miss trick-or-treating to make sure your kids have fun I expect the same so my kids have fun too. It seems greedy or entitled to think it's ok to take free candy but not necessary to give candy. If we all did that there would be no free candy, :(
