Those familiar with Croup

So H came down with croup last week and it has literally worn him out smooth. His doctor gave him 3 days of steroids to help with the inflammation of his airway and then said to do breathing treatments every 4 hours for the cough, she also said that it could take several weeks for the cough to fully go away. He isn't running a fever anymore but his appetite is still really low and he's still very clingy/whiny. He has been waking up off and on every single night coughing his head off. You can still hear that he has a ton of congestion in his chest and I'm having a really hard time trying to get it all broke up to where he can cough it all up. I'm so worried that it is going to turn into an infection. He also has a runny nose and his snot is a yellowish color.

Is this normal for croup? He's had everything under the sun but this and I just feel like he isn't getting any better. When he gets bad nose/chest congestion like this, the ONLY thing that ever helps is antibiotics. His ENT wants to remove his tonsils and adenoids but we are trying to wait til he is a little older. I'm concerned because we leave for Disney World next Saturday and I don't want him to be sick the whole trip!

Would you call the doctor and see if there is anything else we can do or would you just try to wait it out and let it run it's course?

Re: Those familiar with Croup

  • Aww croup sucks!  So sorry to hear DS is sick!

I would probably call the doctor because it is kind of an extreme situation with your impending vacation. That happened to us once when T got the flu and we were set to fly out the next day. They gave me preemptive prescriptions in case he got worse while we were traveling, and good thing they did, I was able to get them filled on our trip and avoid spending hours in a sketchy urgent care.  I'm not sure many doctors would do that, but with T's history, they know us pretty well and did it often.

Hope he feels better soon and enjoys Disney!

This is why I'm worried, if this was the first time he's been sick like this then I would just wait it out but He gets something like this every couple of months that's why his ENT wants the adenoids out. I went ahead and left a message with both doctors to get their opinions.

    Thanks for the advice!!
