Tdap Opinion - are your family & friends getting it too???

My mother and grandmother are going to come after the baby is born to help and they have not had their Tdap vaccine. They are asking if they should get the shot too and I'm a little torn. My husband and I had our vaccinations and I've read about the severity of whooping cough, but I still have mixed feeling about it. On one hand, I want to make everyone that touches, or even looks, at the baby get their vaccine and I want to see their documentation. Then, on the other hand, can I really prevent the baby from coming in contact with whooping cough?...what if a stranger walking down the hallway at the hospital has it. So I guess my question is - who are you requiring get the Tdap vaccination?...everyone or only people that will have constant contact with the baby

Re: Tdap Opinion - are your family & friends getting it too???

  • Anyone that will have "regular " contact. So my FIL and MIL got theirs, but anyone else who would just visit here and there is going a little to far. It's not 100% preventable, but if your IL's asked it sounds like they are open to getting it

  • I would prefer everyone to have it, but my FI, mom, and younger brothers all have it and they're really the only ones that will have regular contact with LO.
  • I am "making" my family get it- any regular visitors. My dad is not happy about it, but oh well. He is the only one making a stink about it- everyone else has no problem getting it. DH's family is too far away to see the new baby regularly.

Why do some people make such a big deal about getting one of these shots? I don't get it. DH had a hissy fit...

  • Thanks everyone! My mom and grandmother are very open to getting it. I don't understand why anyone wouldn't be open to getting one, especially if "moma" is asking you to get one.
  • My DH has no issues about TDap but is dead set against the flu shot.. I don't get it... He wants me to call and make sure they have TDap at the walk in clinic tomorrow we are going together so I'm gonna ask the nurse if she thinks he should get it. Maybe a medical professional saying he needs it will encourage him.

  • I tried to get family members to tasks it. But it was turning into me being crazy and overprotective and drama. We are not that worried about it. I will make everyone purell. Can't force people to get shots abd don't want to threaten baby. Drama free
  • I suggested it but didn't demand it
Everyone read up on it and they all got the tdap and flu shot

  • I was in a similar place. My entire family except great grandparents got it a few years ago when my nephew was born. They will have the most contact with Lo. We didn't ask the ILs to get it because they don't live local and will only see her once a month max. But I have decided against visiting them for the holidays b/c they aren't vaccinated. I haven't required any friends to get it for the same reason, they won't see her as much.
