Toddler moms - transition out of sleep sack? (Martinimomma)

Let me preface this by saying that my toddler is a quirky kid, so I realize we may be the only ones with this issue.

We have used sleep sacks since G was wee. He's now 2, and we still use them. He does not like the toddler ones because they have foot holes and he likes his feet covered by the sack (remember is said he's quirky) and socks are not a sufficient "cover". As a result I'm squeezing him into smaller sacks or trying to cover his feet with the leg openings of the toddler sacks when we put him in bed. It is getting silly. So, I am considering just biting the bullet and doing away with the sleep sack and trying to get him to use a blanket over him big-boy style instead. Past attempts to incorporate a blanket in addition to the sleep sack have been a bust (he moves too much, and ends up sleeping on it rather than under it).

As we have an older home, it is drafty in winter so he will need something...has anyone had to actually work to transition a toddler out of a sleep sack, and if so, how did you do it? (And p.s. I hate the idea of losing the sleep sacks as they inhibit his ability to lift his leg and crawl out of his crib. Color me a bad mommy if that is so wrong.)

  • I think they make the toddler sacks up to like a 5T. Has he outgrown the biggest size?

Otherwise, what about warm footie pjs so his feet don't get cold?

  • If you don't want to get rid of the sleep sack, can you just sew the foot openings closed?  DS does not use a sleep sack so I don't really know anything about the toddler sleep sacks (so this question may be a dumb one).

  • We are not there yet but I would just do heavy fleece footed pjs with something underneath if its really cold or if your not ready to switch out of the sleep sack, I believe they go up to 5T.

  • It's cold upstairs for us too. When DS was a toddler, I dressed him in two footsie pjs. One was a size larger to go over the tighter fitting one underneath. Usually the one underneath was cotton and the outer layer was fleece.  Sometimes we used a two piece cotton pj that's tight fitting like thermals and the fleece footsie pjs over that.

  • We just transitioned her out of the sleep sack a couple of weeks ago. I think having a blanket is SOOO annoying because DD still moves around tons. I am constantly going into her room to adjust the blanket.

We didn't really do much to transition her. I just got rid of the sleep sack one day and put a blanket on her. It didn't stay on long so I took it away and let her fall asleep without it, then put it on her before I went to bed. It has been a few weeks and half the time, I still just wait until she falls asleep before putting it on and the other half, she falls asleep with it on.

Our new place gets much colder and we also started putting her in two piece pj's (the one piece button up ones without the feet were just getting ridiculously small on her) and she thinks the footed ones are the worse things invented. I could not find larger sleep sacks (we used the Halo ones) that did not have the foot holes. I think it could work if you got a 5T one and just sewed the holes together.
