WWA12D?

DS had an appointment today. It was to finish up his series of 12 mo shots. I split it into 2 visits because I didn't want him having a lot at once. Anyhow, we scheduled today's visit at a time when a child development specialist was in the office and she met with us because DS missed a few of the 'milestones' we were asked about at his 12 mo check up, the biggest being pulling up to stand and cruising. The specialist thinks that he is very bright but mildly delayed in his gross motor skills. She noted how he sits - here's the best way I can describe it, when he sits most of the time his spine looks like a C with the biggest portion of the curve being in his lower back and his thighs are flat on the ground. She also noted how he kind of stands on the sides of his feet. She thinks that he has decreased muscle tone and talked about how strengthening his upper body is even connected to chewing and speaking. She suggests seeing a specialists, if even for 1 visit to get some ideas to work on at home because again, she says this is all slight/mild. I asked, "what if we do nothing?" and she said we'd probably only notice in areas such as clumsiness or when not playing sports as well. She did think that doing some PT will help him be a "safer" walker when we get to that point.

What do you guys think? Would you do it?

  • This is interesting. I'm a tiny bit concerned with V. She just started to pull up a few weeks ago and barely starting to cruise. She also stands kind of on the side of her feet.

I would go see a specialist more help is better than no help.

  • Why not? It can only help. Likely the therapist will see him for a bit and give you lots of tips to work with him yourself

This. You'll either get a lot or nothing out of it but it won't hurt.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • I would see the specialist too. But I am one to overly trust doctors.  I don't see the harm in going to at least one visit, that way you're not wondering "what if" later on in life. Better to catch any potential issues now and address them.

  • I say absolutely!

H is currently in PT for low muscle tone in his hips, ankles and feet. When he started walking he would drag his right foot and he points he feet outwards when he walks, he also likes to sit on his knees with his hips out and it makes a W shape. At his 12 month appointment I mentioned it to his doctor and she said he had an abnormal gait and she referred us. We have been to 3 sessions so far and can already tell a huge difference!! His sessions only last 15-30 minutes because he gets tired pretty easily but the therapist is very pleased with the progress that he's made in such a short amount of time.

Good luck with whatever you choose but I think it could really help him!
