Babies: 6 - 9 Months

XP Solid food troubles

My almost 8 month old DD took a little while to get into solids when we started around 6 months, but now really enjoys them. The only problem is that she doesn't like any green vegetables. As a fairly adventurous eater myself (besides being a semi-vegetarian who doesn't eat meat or poultry), I am a little disappointed that it looks like she is going to be a picky eater. I continue to offer her peas, green beans, broccoli and carrots periodically and mix it in with the veggies she does like (which at this point are only sweet potatoes and squash) but I'm wondering if there is any hope that eventually she will start to like these things? Any STMs have experiences with that? Also any suggestions of any other vegetables I can try? I try to do a veggie at dinner time and just feel like I would like to branch out from sweet potatoes and squash. My other question is about finger food. I have started to try to introduce it to her, but she really doesn't seem interested/doesn't get it. I have given her avocado, squash, tofu, cantaloupe and banana diced up very small as well as puffs, and she will play with them, but even though every thing else that she plays with goes into her mouth, she doesn't seem to get or want to put these things in her mouth. I have put little pieces into her mouth to show her (though this seems to defeat the purpose of finger food so I'm not sure if that's helping) but often times she just spits it out. I feel like my daughter is doomed to be eating purees forever! Any suggestions of how to help her figure this out?

  • Arghh I'm on an iPad and it ate my paragraphs, sorry!

  • Don't worry too much right now.  She will figure out finger foods and then you'll have more options with veggies...roasted/pan sauteed, dips, put them in smoothies or mix them in with other things.  I always smashed peas or broccoli into my son's mac & and cheese or I would make him one of those little broccoli and cheese frozen containers.

  • Try pureed zucchini. Cut it into chunks, steam it and puree. You can leave the skin on. DS loves it. The taste is fairly mild.  Also, I got a pouch of apple, blueberry and spinach mixture and DS loves that - though it is obviously not all green.

  • My first daughter who is 2.5 was NOT a picky eater when it came to food and once she got old enough to have an opinion then she became a picky eater. So do not think this is indicative of the future.

Also texture is a big thing for kids, it isn't always about taste.
  • I agree w/ PP about texture sometimes being the real culprit - I think this is why DD seemed to dislike carrots but loved butterbut squash.  The butternut squash puree I made was a lot smoother than the carrot one!  Keep trying - as my pediatrician told me "As long as there's no indication of an allergic reaction keep offering each food."
  • I don't really have advice about purees because we are doing BLW, but just wanted to chime in that for the finger foods, try cutting into french fry shaped pieces.  If they are too small, baby gets them in their fist but can't figure out how to get it out.  If the piece is long enough for them to hold onto and there is still something sticking out, then they can eat it better.

  • no real help other than to say that my oldest DD would not touch a green veggie as an infant but now that she is almost 9 she absolutely loves veggies and will scarf down any veggie (green or other) that i put in her plate
  • I add some pears or apples to the strong veggies like spinach or peas. A very small amount. I used to give fruit in the morning and veggies at dinner. But my new trick is to do the opposite. First of all, he's fussier in the evening and less likely to take something h doesn't like. And second of all, he gets his breakfast at day care and all the babies eat at one of those tables with seats. I think watching the other kids coaxes him to eat better.
