Uhm...wait what?

My doctor mentioned today that if/when I go to L&D to tell whoever is doing my cervical check that my cervix is behind my pubic bone. I didnt think much about it at the time, but now am curious as to if this is going to affect labor overmuch.

Does any one know anything about this? Yeah, Im a FTM and not too knowledgeable about all the intricacies of pregnancy/labor. I tried good ol Doc Google, but it didnt lead to anything even remotely helpful.

You can definitely have a posterior cervix. The cervix does not drop into the vagina... think of it like the top of a knit bag that is drawn closed with a string (minus the actual string unless you've had a cerclage!). As you soften, the little "neck" made by that drawn closed part gets thinner, and as you dilate the opening gets bigger and bigger. As you open the bag (uterus), the cervix does this thinning and opening (effacing and dilating) until it is all the way up and out of the way-- big enough for the baby's head to fit through and enter into the vagina.

Saying that your cervix is posterior is just one way of saying that the cervix is just not in position for labor yet-- it should not cause you any worries!

Mine was posterior as well. Basically made my first cervical check during labour very awkward (literally felt like doc was in up to her elbow). During pushing it shouldn't make a difference. DS was posterior as well, that was what made things a little more difficult.

Oh thank god. Thank you @HFrizzle! I was frustrated and a little upset that nothing seemed to be progressing that I completely forgot to ask what that meant AT the appt. Now Im not so worried.
