Baby Showers

How to reject book in lieu of cards idea

Hey ladies,

I need some advice. My hostess is planning on going this direction with my baby shower. Would you tell her it's not your style? Or just let it go?

TIA!

I would do a combination of what @EastCoastBride said & @somerandomchick said. "I'd really prefer that we don't ask that. I feel uncomfortable telling people how to spend their money. Why don't we find a favorite children's classic ourselves and have all the guests sign it as a guestbook?" That way the hostess understands that you don't want to dictate to guests how to spend their money, but it also allows her to do that idea in a non-tacky way.

  • Thanks girls! Love these ideas. I will give that a shot
  • You might also point out to her that there's an excellent chance guests will buy the same classic books.  Years ago, I went to a baby shower and half the books the MTB received were copies of Goodnight Moon.

It was really awkward for the guests, especially those who had personalized their books with inscriptions.

  • Ask her if you can buy some books for her to use as a guest book instead.

Ugh. This happened at my friend's baby shower. It was a huge shower and she got four copies of three different books, all had a message to the mom to be and baby because it was obviously the card. Then to lighten the fact that she had so many copies, she said she had a copy for each grandparents' house, home and daycare. Which made it even more awkward.

Definitely consider offering buying some books for guests to sign.

Edited to note I was not a hostess for her shower ;)

Whenever I see a post about this subject I think about how many inscribed copies of Goodnight Moon Half Price Books must get on a daily basis.
  • I would make a request that she doesn't ask this of the guests.  In the end though, she is the hostess and there isn't much you can do about it.  Personally, I have been purchasing children's books for years because I'm a teacher and a children's librarian.  I already have a ton of books and a huge children's library.  I put specific books on my registry because people know how big the book collection is, especially since they've helped us move!  I thought that this would help people purchase books without getting doubles or triples of the same book.
