Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Waking...habit or hungry?

My almost 7 mo EBF boy goes to sleep at 7, wakes around 10:30, 1:30, sometimes 5, then up at 7:30. It's been this way close to a month. His sleep changes patterns every few weeks it seems. He did 7-7 waking at 4 to nurse for a few weeks.
I've tried getting him back to sleep without nursing but it doesn't work, with me or hubby.
Ideas???
No, I won't try formula or CIO more than a few min

Around 6 months, my son was doing the same thing. I'm almost positive it was out of habit because he was/is a big eater and getting upwards of 35 ozs of formula a day, but would still want to snack at night. I did night weaning and decreased the amount of formula by an ounce each night (Monday 4 ozs, Tuesday 3 ozs, and so on), so he was getting his snack, but it eventually wasn't worth waking up for. I combined that with progressive waiting and within a week, he wasn't waking up anymore. If you pump and bottle feed, you could try that. I hope it gets better soon!

  • If it gets him to bed faster, just pop him on the boob if it works. The more sleep the both of you can get, the better.
  • Does it seem like he's nursing long enough in the day? What about his sessions at night? If they seem like true sessions he may need the calories and isn't drinking enough during the day

  • Is he in your room or his own? How much/often is he eating during the day? I think it's still normal to be up once MOTN for an EBF baby but I would say 3 could be habit. Depends on the rest of his day, though.
  • The rest of the days very routine. He eats every 2 to 3 hours some sessions are longer than others but I would think he's getting enough during the day. I'm fine with once or twice during the night but three-time seems to be excessive once even be great. He is in his own room in the crib at night and has been since about six weeks old. we even put in a space heater the other night thinking he was cold and that seemed to help wakings from about 5 to 6 times a night down to two or three. About two weeks ago we stop swaddling him and that was pretty good right off the bat. It just seems the only way that I can get him back to sleep without screaming is nursing back to sleep and yes he is actually nursing and I just use me as a pacifier at night.

  • My LO is 6.5 months and was only waking once until about a month ago too. Looking at the responses here, I think my guy is not eating enough in the morning and/or right before bedtime. He used to bf twice at those times and now it's only once, did anything like that change for you? We are also getting over a cold and when I think about it his sessions have been a little shorter maybe because he was so stuffed up.
  • Thanks for your responses. His sessions are all pretty good. Maybe one short one a day if distracted. I'm thinking of just doing a dream feed before I go to bed, then just dealing with it. I'm tired, but he's only little once and won't breastfeeding forever :) I'll try to enjoy while I can
