January 2014 Moms

Off work as of today and on modified bed rest. Prayers needed.

Uuugh.. Its been a frustrating past couple if days. I started with a UTI last week and was having a ton of braxton hicks. I got put on antibiotics and told to take it easy. I saw my Dr. yesterday and i was still having a decent amount of contractions so she said she wanted to check me and I was closed, she also did a fetal fibronection test (FFN). This is either a positive of negative test. Its a culture done of the cervix. a positive test can basically mean you have a risk to deliver in the next few weeks. But doesn't necessarily mean you will. Its not the best of tools, but also if she get a positive you don't want to mess around because it can mean you could potentially go into labor. A negative test is great, means you will not be going into labor. Any who, mine was positive. My Dr. called me as soon as she got the results and told me she wanted me to go into L and D and get steroids for the baby's lungs and get monitor so they could watch my contractions and go from there. I ended up having like 3 in the 2.5 hrs I was there but a bunch of irritibility, got IV fluids, steroids and rechecked and was still closed. I followed up today with my Dr. and she told me i am officially off work now until I deliver. I am going in tomorrow for a cervical ultrasound to check the actual length of the cervix. I am also going to start progesterone suppositories my Dr. said it relaxes the uterus and help to prevent contractions. I am not technically on "bed rest" but she doesn't want me on my feet all day. She said to be more of a couch potato that I could still go grocery shopping and do light chores around the house but to make sure I take breaks. If i do go to any family events or anything to make she I am sitting a lot.

We can't really afford for me to be off because I am the only source of income because my dh is in med school. We do have loans to fall back on, money saved up for a house that we are suppose to start looking for in february, and I will qualify for some sort of short term disability but will be off some of the time unpaid. It will all be worth it in the end and long as this little peanut stay in and continues to bake away, preferably till january. I will do what ever it take to keep this little guy or gal safe and healthy. Prayers are much appreciated for continued baking of the bun! Thanks ladies for listening : )

  • Good luck! I'm in the same situation as far as contractions and modified bedrest and am also on ibuprofen and nifedipine to prevent preterm labor. Just remember that each day and each week that passes is a big accomplishment :)
  • T&Ps your way! I hope your LO stays in and cooks awhile longer!

  • I posted the same post two weeks ago as I had a UTI and was having really bad BH contractions. I also had the FFN test and mine thankfully came back negative. The doctor said if it was positive he would have been watching me like a hulk and that we could prevent be from going into labor. I had a conversation about the FFN test the other day with one of the ob's I call on and he said a lot of his colleagues don't even use the test bc its so unreliable and that he put a women on bed rest bc of a positive and she delivered a week past her due date. I really feel your pain as I have been having anxiety over this for the past two weeks. I find out tomm if my infection is gone and I feel like time is moving so slow. I will be thinking of you and I'm here if you need to talk since I'm kind of going through the same issue and can relate.

  • @ jmattis. Wow our stories sound almost identical. Ya I know you can't really rely on the test. At the same time I don't want to mess around. I will do what ever my Dr. tells me to. Thank you very much!!

  • Listen to your doctor and take a few days off for now. Your condition might improve in a long run. Maybe your body just needs some rest for now. Thoughts and prayers are with you.
  • @Roses87- really...I wouldn't worry so much about the positive FFN- it really means nothing if it's positive. If it's negative there's like a 98% chance you won't go into labor, if it's positive they really have no idea. And if they had done any cervical checks or speculum exams or you had sex in 48 hours, it's not accurate at all, there's a really high chance of false positives. I had a positive fFn at 29 weeks, I got the steroids, was put on bed rest for 2 weeks, on and off contractions but no cervical dilation. I went back to work in 2 weeks after things settled down but I did still have contractions on and off until my water broke and I delivered at 36 weeks 4 days. I know it's scary and it sucks but I wouldn't worry too much:) Just take it easy and listen to the doctor- keep that baby cooking!

  • Lots of positive thoughts and prayers your way! Here's to hoping LO likes the warm oven and stays put to bake longer!

I agree with you 100% I wouldn't want to mess around either and my BH were so bad I couldn't even talk without getting one. I can't imangie the stress your under getting a positive FFN result. I've been a ball of anxiety even with a negative result and just waiting for my urine culture to see if the antibiotics worked. Thank god you're getting immediate attention and the doctor is all over this and can do something to help prevent it. Def message me if you need to! I'll be thinking of you XX

ETA: I was on bedrest for a week and that really helped the contractions stop. I would drink water all
Day and only get up to use the bathroom. So hopefully that helps
Calm things down for you too.

I had a FFN test at 32 weeks with my last pregnancy. It came back negative and I went into labor the next day. After speaking to the high risk doctor, she said she hates those and does not consider them reliable one way or another. Good luck and I will be thinking about you.

  • @ ac1259- I hadn't had any sex or and exams within a week of the test. My Doctor asked me before she did it. I know its sketchy if its positive. But i will error on the side of caution just in case! : )

This was my first one ever. I would say no. But maybe I am wrong. I actually thought I had a kidney stone at first. Out of no where I got a sharp stabbing pain in my left flank. As time progressed, it radiated around my side towards the front as well. The pain for way worse after peeing which I think is a classic sign? I couldn't even sleep on the side affected. Luckily I have had no pain since Sunday, So hopefully we are all done with that now. I also had urinary frequency which I had for a while which I just related it to pregnancy, but now its better than before. I am thinking I had this for a while i just wasnt aware till I got pain. I finish antibiotics today! They will recheck my urine next week at my appt. So hopefully I will be all clear!

  • So sorry to hear this. I have been on bed rest since 21 weeks due to a shorten cervix. I was having a lot of BH but I think between bed rest, drinking a ton more water (can't forget to now) and the progesterone supplement , they really slowed down. Hope it works for you too! Fx crossed the being off work is worth it and keeps that baby put!

  • @Jmattis-I still have no real answer for that. I was hospitalized 3 times over the next week in excruciating left sided pain that was causing me to contract from the pain and stress. I was usually dehydrated when I came in so I always got fluids. They thought it was a UTI at first so I got 2 doses of IV antibiotics which seemed to help but the urine culture was negative and they didn't send me home with antibiotics. They checked for a kidney stone after the doctor actually saw how much pain I was in but they only found one of my kidneys had some fluid (fairly normal in pregnancy). But the baby was kind of in the way and made everything hard to see.

I think they finally said I pulled a muscle and it kinda settled down with rest so that was my only real answer. I'm just hoping it doesn't come back this time!

  • Ts&Ps!!!  Keep cooking that baby!!!
  • As in regards to returning to work. I think my Dr. Is against that. I am a nurse and there are nights where I barely have time to sit down. I think if I had a more relaxed job She would be more willing to. When I told her my situation with me being the only income for us She said maybe we can revisit it at 34 weeks. She still wrote on all my paper work for work off till after delivery. So we will see. I also have another issue She is sending me to a specialist for. I have had issues ever since 5 weeks with this pregnancy. So I have a feeling she thinks enough is enough and your off work. But we will see. I will be seeing her weekly now and am sure we'll have plenty of time to discuss the whole work issue depending how everything progresses. But for now I am completely on the same ground with her I don't want this baby out anytime soon. So i am ok with this for now. I contracted way more when I was working so this is a good thing, being off. Another plus side, I work nights... I get to be a "normal" person again!!! Hallelujah!!!! For a little while atleast. Nights have never been easy for me.
