Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

what does your LO use for a blanket or sleepsack?

does your LO still use a sleepsack?  what age did you transition to the "walkable" ones with the foot holes (like this: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11343979&cp=2255957.2273447.3405197&parentPage=family )  And what age did they go to just regular blankets/covers?

my LO will need something warm this winter, and I'm trying to decide what to get... TIA!

  • We still use the ones with the footholes just because it's easier and he stays cozy all night. He moves around like crazy and blankets weren't working well. My son is a really big kid so I think I may have started the foothole ones when he started cruising around 10 months since I figured it would be smarter to have footholes ready for when he started walking. He still has a couple without holes that I use when we haven't done laundry. If we use those, I just make sure he puts it on right before bed rather than part of the get-into-pajamas routine.

  • We still use regular sleep sacks, DD can walk just fine in them.  She moves all over the crib so a blanket would never stay on her.  I am going to keep using these until I think she can handle a regular blanket.  I see no reason to use the one with the foot holes, I would just put her in warmer PJs and not use anything since the point of the sleep sack (to me) is to feel like she has a blanket on her.

  • DS2 has had a blanket in his crib since about 10 months old.  He doesn't use it for covers, just to cuddle with.  Now he has about 5 that he must have in the crib to cuddle with...it's insane.  In the winter, he wears footed, fleece pajamas and I'll put a long sleeve onesie on underneath the pajamas if it's super cold.  We've never used sleep sacks and haven't had a problem keeping him warm.

FWIW, DS1 is 5 and still can't/doesn't really keep covers on.  He still wiggles around quite a bit while he sleeps and usually bunches the covers up at the foot of his bed.  We just make sure he's dressed in warm pajamas and he stays plenty warm.
  • We didn't use sleep sacks over the summer, so we are just using a blanket and it is actually very comforting to him. We also make sure to dress him warm enough for bed.

We've actually never used a sleepsack. DD has used a toddler size blanket since she was a year old. I check on her before I go to bed to make sure she's still covered. Before that, I just put a onesie on her under her pajamas if it was cold.

Me too.  We only wear them for bed so I don't need her to be able to walk around in it.  Plus I think it helps curb any desire to escape the crib.  Also our house is super old and our AC doesn't do a great job of keeping her room at a controlled temp so we need more than a onesie and fleece pjs.

  • We did regular sleep sacks (NO HOLES) until 18-24 months or so, depending on the kid, when we switched to a thin blanket. Our kids walked fine, no stumbling in the sleep sacks.

  • We still use a sleep sack (regular one, no footholes) mainly because there was a few times she was putting her foot up and over the side of the crib.  We only have hardwood floors with a small rug by her crib and I was scared she would fall out and hurt herself.  the sleepsack has been preventing her trying to escape :-)  She is 18 months.

  • We've used an A&A swaddle blanket since she was about 7 months old.
  • We stopped sleep sacks in the summer. He could walk in his sleep sack. He has giant stuffed carrot he cuddles up to and put a small baby quilt (it takes up maybe 3/4 of his crib) I put on him when I put him in his crib (already asleep). He usually wriggles out of it after a few hours. He wears two piece (longsleeve) or footed pyjamas. He's a hot baby so I don't worry about him staying warm. I'll probably give him a warmer blanket when it gets colder.

Oh I should mention he doesn't STTN so I cover him each time I put him back in his crib.

  • DD uses a blanket and we put her in warm footie PJ's when it's cold. We tried the sleepsack and she hated it. Since than it's just blankets for her.

This.  DD will be 16 months this weekend.  She is a climber!  I plan to keep her in the regular sleepsack until she is out of the crib, or until she no longer fits in them :)  She can walk around, but can't get her leg up to climb out.

  • thank you all for your responses!  I really appreciate learning from parents with older kids.

  • We still use regular sleep sacks without the footed holes.  Like some others said, it does not seem to prohibit her from walking around in her crib.  Our daughter moves around a lot in her sleep and a regular blanket will not stay on her.  Also she is a light sleeper, so if we went in her room at night and tried to cover her up, she'd wake immediately which would be a disaster for us to try to get her back down.  I figure she'll stay in them until she's ready to understand the concept of covering herself up.

  • We use a sleep sac, in fact she's not napping week at daycare, so we brought in an extra sleep sac to see if that helps. Lucy moves a lot, while sleeping, so a blanket doesn't work so well.

  • We haven't used sleep sacks since DS was about 6 months old. We switched over to Carter's jammies and love them. DS will mostly wear fleece jammies and for a blanket, he uses an old A&A swaddle as a lovie/blanket.

  • We used a swaddle sack when she was first born but she didn't like it for very long - she wanted ot be free! Sleep Sacs did not last long either. We put warm jammies on her and start her out covered up with a blanket. We have used a regular crocheted afghan in her crib since maybe 6 months or so? She's done fine with it and I was happy knowing if it went over her face it had holes so she could breathe through it.
  • We haven't used a sleep sack since spring but restarted this week with some large ones, still with no foot holes.  DS seems to be able to move around the crib and has no issues with them.  We use fleece PJ's but our house is really drafty.  DS hates a blanket covering him but he whimpers all night if he's cold. He seems fine with the sleep sack covering him. Right now he's in a Cloud B Lulla bag and I have some insulated Grobag sleep sacks from a friend that I hope will work for us too.  They all seem very large. Last year we used a medium fleece gunapod which still fits him but its pretty dingy we used it so much.  I loved the gunapod and would have bought another in large if I didn't have all the hand me downs. Best baby purchase I made.

  • We used a sleep sack and always have. Not the footie ones though. Our LO is 18 months. It gets cold here and we keep the heat low as we sleep better. So we do footed pajamas (not fleece, irritates his skin, a super thick sleep sack and them we have a flannel sheet on his crib and flannel pillowcase on his pillow. Then we also give him a blanket as well. He usually stays under the blanket for the first half of the night.
