Babies: 6 - 9 Months

LO not crazy for solids

Has anyone had a baby who isn't crazy about solids at 6 months? I know anything before 1 year is just for fun. But I feel like everyone around me, their babies start eating solids right away at 6 months or sooner, grabbing the spoon with such enthusiasm. LO is inconsistent. Some days she seems to like it. Other days she seems annoyed and refuses to eat. I gave her a break from solids for a couple days, and then gave her a little oatmeal today once, which she did eat. I feel like if she's refusing to eat, giving her a little break is good. I'm not in any rush and am not forcing her at all. But then my grandmother says to continue offering her food so she gets used to it. If your LO took a while to get into eating solids, how did you approach it?

  • Our son is 7 months today and still isn't crazy about solids.. I guess I'm just not too concerned at this point.. He's still getting nutrients through formula. I do wish he liked them more but I figure in time he will

Mine is just 7 months old and isn't crazy about solids either. She didn't like to be spoon fed, like didn't opened up for it nor seemed excited about it.
I think I was a little too excited about this solid thing. I had made purees of various fruits and veggies and was hoping to go through them one at a time with her..She had other plans I guess and just wasn't a fan of the purees or being spoon fed.

I gave her a few days break and tried again and when she wasn't interested still we gave up and started her on BLW. She mostly plays with her food. It's been a month now. I hope soon she'd started eating more instead of playing with it.

So far she likes to play with broccoli the most (least expected). I don't know if it's the texture of the little leafy buds that she likes or she actually likes the test of broccoli but hey I am not complaining. I am dipping broccoli in yogurt and oatmeal and giving it to her!

When we were doing purees there were a few days where she hated to be in her high chair so we backed off and just put her there to play with her toys..I was afraid she'd get an aversion to her high chair and food.. and wanted meal time to be fun.

My DD isn't good at nursing either (and refuses bottles) so I was really hoping that she'd like and eat more solid but I understand I can't rush it, it's on her terms. So we'll keep at BLW and see what happens.
  • I can't answer this from personal experience as we haven't started solids yet, but I just wanted to say not to worry too much about it! Keep offering solids (maybe once a day?), but just follow your baby's lead and don't try to force it. She'll eat more when she's ready! Every baby is a little different.

  • DD is 7 months and is still unsure about solids.  I think it depends how hungry she is.  It's all for fun before 1 so I'm just working on getting her used to different things and will try 2 times each day. Don't stress.  Just keep trying.

  • Are you doing purees?  It could be that she just doesn't like purees and a spoon.  You could give her finger foods instead.

  • DD is 6.5 months and at 1st no matter what we tried her on she spit it all out almost like any new flavor was too shocking to her.  She wouldn't eat any jar food so I blended some fresh veggies and fruit and she loved those.  We tried jar veggies again for convenience and she took to them.  DD almost always spits out the first couple of bites until she is use to it but then you can't feed her fast enough.  Just keep trying here and there, she will eat when she's ready.

We've been doing them for 2 months and DD was into it and suddenly stopped liking it. I do homemade food and I heard from a friend that also made purées that around 7 months her baby stopped taking to it. So like her, I tried Ella's (she did Gerber), and LO is taking to it again.

She isn't a big eater, so I dropped her morning feed and now we just do a small lunch, a snack in the afternoon, and dinner. She eats what she wants of it, and we save the rest.

I try to stick with the homemade fruits m veggies she loves, so she still gets some, but it's hit n miss.

She is much more into finger foods such as Cheerios, puffs, tofu, egg yolk, etc.

  • I'm delaying solids. I don't think they are necessary so I wouldn't worry about it

You may not think they are necessary but at 6.5 months, she is more than ok to be wanting her daughter to have them and being exposed to new tastes and textures IS something her daughter will have to learn to tolerate.

  • my DD seems to prefer textures. she didn't like the super watery "first" foods.  when i made her her first sweet potato puree and kept it very thick, and smooth like mashed potatoes essentially she loved it! she seems to prefer very thick smooth purees with maybe some chunkiness but not a lot

Yes, eventually, but it's not a big deal if her DD doesn't want it now. It's not something that needs to be forced.

I'm not forcing it. I'm trying to make it fun for her and mixing it up. She's unpredictable. Yesterday she seemed to like yogurt, today not so much. I'm going to steam some carrots and put little pieces of it in front of her to see what happens. I'm not stressing. She's 20 lbs and 28.5 inches so I know she's getting plenty with formula!

Thanks everyone for your input and suggestions! I'm going to keep giving her different things. I hate wasting food, but I think offering her something once a day at this point works.

  • My 7 month old is the same. And I know its not that important but as EBF and work and my supply is slowing down I wish she would pick up eating more solids.

Some days she will eat 2 ounces other days she won't open her mouth for any!
