Difficult fur-baby question.

We had to put our precious little dog, Patrick, down Saturday morning. He had some health issues that progressed much more rapidly than we thought it would, and on Friday it took a turn for the worst, and we knew it was time.

Worst. Thing. EVER.

H and I are having a hard time with it, and Cal walks around looking for him and saying "dog". It feels so empty now.

My question is, if you have put a pet down, how long did you wait before getting another?

Here is a pic of Pat and Cal on St. Patrick's day - Pat's "rescue day".

Re: Difficult fur-baby question.

  • I'm so so sorry.  =((

I think only you and your family can know the right amount of grieving time.  When I lost one of the two brother cats I had I waited 3 months to get another.  In our case we were moving and the remaining cat was clearly lonely and needed a companion.  I would let yourself get used to Patrick being gone but leave your heart open for the possibility for another furry family member if the right one comes along.

  • Thank you all for your answers. It's hard for me to articulate on this subject at the moment - so, yeah, thank you.

  • I am so so sorry :( my heart is breaking for you as I know how hard it is to lose a pet.
  • I'm so sorry Ind. I agree with others that you'll know when you are ready. My parents dog passed about 7 years ago and while my mom is ready for a new dog my dad isn't. Just keep the communication between you and DH open. Also you are all more than welcome to come love on my dogs. Callen can hog Coda since Henry kinda scared him. Keeping you in my thoughts!

  • If it was me I'd do it right away. I can't have no pet. It feels weird.

  • I don't have any advice either, but wanted to say how sorry I am. Definitely get another one when you're ready. I'm sure it will lift your spirits a little!

  • Ah, I'm so sorry for your loss. Dogs are so special and really true little friends. I have never faced having to get another pet, so no advice there. But, if it would make your family happy right now to get another pet, I would go for it.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. Pets really are family and it hurts to say goodbye to them.

Personally, I've always gotten new pets really quickly, usually within the same week. It always makes me feel a little guilty, like I'm trying to replace them or something, but it helps me with the healing process to have a new pet around. Once when a cat of mine died, my mom and I tried to wait a few months to get a new one and couldn't stand it. We ended up going to the shelter and bringing home TWO cats when we had only lost one. lol

I agree with PPs, do what feels right for you!

  • I'm so sorry. Losing a pet is so hard :(

When I was about 7, my parents had to put our dog down while I was at school one day. The very next day, I came home to a new puppy. It was the best thing they could have done for my sisters and I. I know Cal is very young, so it shouldn't be that hard for him to forget, but you and YH will have the harder time.
The puppy my parents surprised us with as kids passed away while I was pregnant with LO and it was devastating for us all, especially my younger sister. She got a puppy about a week later and, while we all still miss and grieve for little Chloe to this day, her new puppy really helped her cope.

I know some people think its like "replacing" your dog, but really it's just about moving on, remembering the good times, and helping with the grieving process. Based on my personal experiences, I would always recommend getting a new dog sooner rather than later to help deal with a lost pet.

    Hugs!!

  • It breaks my heart to know that our furry friends only have a limited time with us. i am sorry that your little buddy is in doggy heaven. I still remember when we lost our childhood dog and I had to give him his last hug before school. I was so sad, I didn't even want to say goodbye. It still makes me cry. Everyone is different, but I would personally want another dog fairly soon after, especially since LO will be old enough to understand. Ultimately, it is when it feels right like others have said, but if you are adopting, then it can take time to find the right one. Hugs to you! I have no idea what we are going to do when our dogs go because my H gives one of our dogs more love than me! (Well, at least it feels that way)

  • I am so sorry for your loss. I don't think that there is a timeline for getting a new dog. It is a matter of your family being ready and having the time to invest in a new member of the family.

  • Very sorry to hear about your loss. I agree with everyone. You will know when it's time.
