Infertility

Next Steps

Hi Ladies! So, I found out my protocol for IVF #1 today. I am to stay on BC until 11/17, then start stims on 11/21. ER should happen sometime during the first week of Dec. My RE is concerned that I will overstim and for that reason says that we will need to freeze the embryos and do an FET in January. This is not the news I was expecting and I'm feeling a little down that we will not be doing a fresh transfer. I just keep telling myself that my RE is the professional & is doing what will be best to get me pregnant.

Anyone else going through or have gone through this protocol?

Re: Next Steps

  • I had to freeze, but it was bc of pgt. I was disappointed as well. Seems like this whole process is a test of patience!

We're doing a freeze all but due to progesterone levels at day of trigger. Why does she worry you'll overstim? History or dx? I'm mobile so I can see if it's in your sig.

  • @katib77 I have no idea why she is worried that I will overstim. My DX & history is stage 4 endo. I am going to call back tomorrow to find out and get a better explanation.

Baby Will born 8/18. He's perfect.
  • My RE said that if he could, he would always freeze and do FET's.  Saying that, I was a freeze all due to OHSS.  I wasn't told that until after my ER, so I was devastated.  Really, it's a good thing as it allows your body to heal and your ovaries to shrink back to normal. I'm still waiting on FET #2 (been delayed once), but I was able to try FET #1, 2 months later.  Good luck!!

    TTC since 9/2011. DH - 32, me 32.

FET#2 August: delayed due to thin lining (6.3).  Took a few months off to try and thicken the lining with lots of estrodial.  FET#2.2 December: Cancelled due to thin lining (4.8). Two frosties left.

*New RE* Sonohystrogram and hystereoscopy done in Feb.

IVF #2: ER 3/4/14  ET 3/7/14, transferred 3, 3 day 9 cell perfect embryos.  No frosties.

  • My RE is the complete opposite.  They prefer to always maximize the fresh cycle.  Perhaps that is just because of my age?  Their clinical practice has had great success on freeze/thaw rates so i'm sure it's nothing to do with that...

Perhaps you have really good ovarian reserve and they anticipate good development?
Either way, your RE should be able to plan a cycle that will minimize the possibility of OHSS.

And the only thing that matters is that you trust your physician.  Every cycle is different.

This is exactly what you should be feeling.  I felt the same way, as we had to do an all freeze cycle, too.  If your RE thinks it's necessary definitely just trust him.  Mine predicted that I would get OHSS, and sure enough I did and it was literally one of the worst things I've ever experienced.  I was thanking my lucky stars that we decided to do a FET from the beginning because it would have happened anyway, and at least at that point it wasn't a surprise.  Once all is said and done your FET will be here before you know it!  EDIT:  Also, as much as you feel like it stinks to have to wait, doing an FET actually gives them more control over when in your cycle they'll transfer, and you'll be as close to "natural" in your cycle as can be so it's a better environment for your embryos :-)  I was on day 20 of my cycle when I had my FET on Sunday, and we transferred a 6-day blast, so it was literally EXACTLY where I would be if it were a natural cycle!  Just another positive of FETs vs. ETs.  And like a PP said, my clinic also prefers to do frozen transfers if/when possible because their results are much better - there's no conclusive "why" yet, but it's just worked out that way in the past few years.
