hungry or habit??

My LO has NEVER slept through the night. He may give me a longer stretch in the beginning (3-4hrs) but after that it is every 2 hrs on a good night. Its like clockwork, tonight it was 11:15, 1:15, and now 3:15.

It seems like sometimes he will go to sleep without the boob, but the boob is just sooooooomuch easier.

So I know not always hunger....is it just a habit? It just seems weird to me that he will wake out of a dead sleep exactly every two hours if he isn't hungry.

I know I haven't phrased all of this properly but honestly I'm too exhausted too fix it.....

  • I'm in the same boat here. I could rock him back to sleep but I'm too exhausted in the MOTN so I just give him the boob and it knocks him out right away. I really don't know what it is but he eats as if he was hungry. We are nowhere close to STTN sigh.

  • I don't know for sure but it could be habit. Any way your SO could rock the baby back to sleep? Or you could have SO give a bottle to see if baby seems hungry or is just looking for the comfort of nursing. My DH helped rock my DD back to sleep and the first few nights were rough and it took him awhile but now I have DH get up if I fed DD a few hours prior and know she's not hungry. No temptation for me to nurse and DD isn't wondering why I'm not nursing her. She gets more used to my DH the more he comforts her.

This is exactly what we're trying now. It's just frustrating, I get the feeling Hubby doesn't understand why I don't just feed him. It seems so much easier, but in the long run we need to ween him off these MOTN feedings and LO needs to learn other ways to get back to sleep other then the boob. Plus I've been doing 100% of the MOTN wake ups since day one and mama needs a break! I'll probably have a chat with him tonight about how I feel and that he needs to be on board with the gameplan.

  • I felt guilty asking my DH because he works and I am a SAHM but he got on board. I usually nurse her to sleep then if she wakes up before the 4 hours I'll have DH step in and rock her. If its more than 4-5 hours I usually nurse her. It's taken DH 40 or so minutes to get her back to sleep sometimes. I also make sure I hold DD in a non-nursing position when I'm just comforting her so she isn't thinking about nursing as much. I am lucky that my DD found her fingers and uses them to comfort herself. She also sleeps longer and better on her stomach. I hope you find something that works!!
