Calcium Pills

Anyone taking calcium pills aside from prenatals? My prenatals don't have much calcium and I'm not a big milk drinker. Will talk to my doc this week. My next appt is Wed.

Re: Calcium Pills

  • My doc recommended I take a calcium supplement. I've been eating calcium chews.

  • Oh thanks!! I will take one tonight and check in with my doc. I was taking them prior to pregnancy but wasn't sure if I should continue and I keep forgetting to ask!
  • I take them as well! :)
  • I'm lactose intolerant and am also taking calcium supplements.

  • I am planning to ask my OB about this at my appointment. I'm taking my prenatals but my teeth have been hurting all over lately so I'm wondering if my little girl is soaking up all my calcium intake and my teeth are suffering because of it. I don't drink milk unless its strawberry or chocolate lol...but I try I eat lots of cheese and other calcium filled foods....

  • Yes. Doctor said I should aim for 600 mg/day of supplemented Calcium - which doesn't include what I should naturally be getting from my diet. I'm currently taking some horse pills, but plan to switch to the liquid calcium recommended by @madapple because it looks delicious (and how often can you say that about vitamins?).

  • I also take it extra to my vitamins - m y family have oesteoperosis so started taking chewable a every day since beginning of year. Baby is making bones so needs all that calcium! :)
  • I take vitamin D with calcium.  I normally drink a lot of milk and it wouldn't be a problem, but with GD I have to limit milk, so I am glad I take the extra supplements.  I also pop tums whenever I feel nauseous.

  • I read you are supposed to have 1,000mg of calcium a day.  Keep in mind your body cannot absorb more than 500mg at a time.  I usually take my prenatal and then the 500mg supplement.  Just make sure you're taking them at different times, otherwise some of it gets wasted.
