I see it this way - if something were to go wrong with my pregnancy, I don't want to sit and sift through what I could have done differently. Or agonize if that drink was really worth it. And regardless of how it does or does not affect my baby, the fact remains that anything I eat or drink is what he/she eats or drinks. And that will not include alcohol.
No one is telling her to drink a double shot of rum. She said "a few sips". You take in more alcohol rinsing with listerine. Or is that not ok during pregnancy either.

When someone asks advice about drinking during pregnancy to a bunch of Internet strangers, some are going to be adamantly against it. I don't think that's shocking and I'm actually really surprised that many more haven't spoken up. They also didn't use car seats "back in the day" but I wouldn't expect anyone to give you a break on that. I'm not saying a few sips of alcohol is going to do any harm, but if there are any risks I can avoid during pregnancy, you better believe I'm going to. If you want to roll your eyes at that, fine by me!
Yeah I understand that and of course I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize my babies health in any way but you swear like she's asking to shoot up! She just asked about having a sip of a piña colada for godsakes! It's not that serious really. If it was something more serious than yes

Ok...but in all fairness, if something was wrong (god forbid), it could have been due to listeria from a cantaloupe. Or an OTC medication. Or environmental pollutants. More and more studies are finding that light to moderate drinking during pregnancy causes no ill effects in the fetus. It has nothing to do with the "olden days" or what people used to do. Please don't paint people who responsibly imbibe during pregnancy as alcoholics who just couldn't resist the booze for "nine measly months." Your own link states that issues from alcohol present in only 0.9% of births -- a relatively small amount. Do you really think that group consists solely of babies born to mothers who had an occasional glass of wine with dinner?
I wouldn't but I have worked in NICU with babies born with FAS and it is the most heartbreaking thing in the world. I just wouldn't take the risk but luckily I didn't actually drink before my pregnancy (grew up with an alcoholic uncle-kinda puts you off) so no one will guess from that. Do whatever you are comfortable with. Obviously when asking a group of ladies on the Internet we are all going to haw different opinions :-)
my midwife had stated you get higher chances of FAS with binge drinking. not necessarily the amount, but how fast you down the drink. that's why it is suggested slow and with food. especially a high carb or high protein dinner. thank you all for your concern....I'll be fine
ps. most doctors say no to drinking instead of moderation because people, when it comes to alcohol, usually do not do that properly. that doesn't mean 3 beers instead if 6 like they normally would. moderation is a wide interpretation word depending who you ask.

I'm not sure how I'm "swearing like she's asking to shoot up" because I didn't flame anyone, just justified my own opinion. If I was going to flame someone for something, it wouldn't be taking a few sips of alcohol when your doctor says its fine and you are comfortable with it. It would be asking a few random people on the Internet if its okay and then acting on their responses. But I don't think that was why OP posted this so I didn't do that. I think it's just been a slow few days since our UO thread.

This. Exactly this. Guilt is a prime motivator for most women....self included!
I'm not trying to be snarky here, but OP, it seems to me that you've already made up your mind that taking a few sips isn't a big deal. If that's how you feel, why bother asking internet strangers for validation? Just my 2 cents.
Re: crap....I'm up against a wall please help.
