Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Almond vs Rice Milk?

Our little guy is being tested for food allergies, etc currently, waiting on the results. Since he was only a few weeks old he has been congested constantly, struggled with tummy issues, etc. Recently we switched to cow's milk when he turned one and it only got worse, major congestion, constipation to the point of crying and reflux/vomiting (he had this before but it had improved). So I bought a box of almond milk and he loves it, no more constipation and I'm hoping that after his current cold is gone the congestion might go away too. However I've read some stuff saying almond milk isn't good for toddlers and I'm looking for some opinions, or other options such as rice, etc. Thanks!

Anything involving rice makes me nervous. They say there is trace amounts of arsenic in all rice products. Of course soy milk has estrogen which isn't good for toddlers either. I've never heard any negative comments about almond milk, what might those be? Unfortunately, whatever you chose, there is always going to be something negative about it.

My parents are vegans so drink Almond milk for that reason. I've gotten so used to it so it's what I drink and cook with. When DD turned one I cleared it with the doctor. Almond milk has more calcium than cows milk. To me the worry was the fat since there isn't non-fat, 2%, full fat options like cows milk. Doc wasn't concerned at all and said his concern was calcium intake but almond milk has plenty of calcium. Though I do make a conscious effort to make sure to give her avocado, pb, & full fat other dairy products. She loves the stuff, it's all we've ever given her. We buy Blue Diamond Unsweetened Original.

*Also obviously with almond milk make sure LO isn't allergic to nuts.

  • Our pedi recommended rice milk since it's easier on the stomach. Our son has milk allergy issues and can't handle soy (he threw up about a month and a half ago when we tried half a bottle of soy formula with his regular formula) so we are taking it really slow as in we are just offering about 1/4 of a cup after meals currently. I'm hoping in a week or two to give him a full cup and see how it goes. He is on alimentum currently, but can eat items with milk baked in and not have problems and he even seemed to handle a little mac n cheese the other day so I'm hoping he's growing out of it, but yeah, the rice milk has gone really well so far and he enjoys the taste.

  • eva has been having rice milk since about 10mnths (added to expressed breast milk when my supply went down because of tyroid issue) and has been fine.  i would prefer almond milk but she has sensitive skin and i know that almond milk has been known to create eczema if given too early so we are waiting a little longer to switch.  hubby and i are both sensitive to cow's milk and we tried it for a few days with eva and she stunk like sour milk in her mouth from the spit up...didn't take us too long to switch
  • Another almond milk mom here too. My guys drank WCM for about a month when I made the switch. One of my twins had serious constipation issues (like yours, crying etc) and about 2 days after we transitioned he was pooping every day. I also substitute fat through other means but they've done great on it. From what I understand rice milk has zero nutritional value which is why we chose almond.

  • I've heard rice milk is the only alternative milk you shouldn't give to toddlers because it doesn't have the nutritional content of some of the other milks and does have the arsenic concern.

Other alternatives to milk are coconut milk, hemp milk, 7-grain milk, etc.  I would personally give some coconut milk for the healthy fats (the kind the can) and some almond milk --- but make the almond milk yourself to avoid added carageenan, which is in most commercial brands.
This.  Our pedi said anything except rice milk.  She claims that rice milk does not have the nutritional content that LO needs.  Her suggestions are soy, coconut or almond milk.  We give almond milk.

We do half soy milk/half almond milk. Almond milk is very low in fat and protein but a good source of calcium. Soy milk has a bit more fat and a good source of protein.
