  • It is my understanding that all military pay will be exempt...so as far as I know my husband will be getting his entire paycheck. And yes USAA is giving interest free loans to members who need them. I believe Navy Fed is doing the same. It really is sad that our entire legislative branch can't get it together. There is fault on both sides and sadly there are regular Americans paying the price.

  • My husband is a Federal Wildland Firefighter & considered an "essential" employee. Today he was forced to go to work without pay, is unable to use any sick or vacation and will hopefully be paid back pay if/when this mess is sorted out. Until then, we budget and use our saving sparingly. We have 2 kiddos & (of course) one on the way. In the next 3 months we have my son's 5th bday, my husbands 30th, a cold winter w. the need to buy fuel & wood, holiday traveling, a newborn and Christmas.  I'm stressed just thinking about it. *fingers crossed* this is over soon.
  • I don't think I saw anyone answer this, but yes, WIC funding is $0 until this blows over. THat means money the states already had for it is there, but it won't last beyond a week from what I've been looking at here and there.

So this is all because of abortions? Huh.
Women have abortions and women are the root of all evil.

So this is the fault of anyone who has a vagina.

Duh, I should have known. It's Pelosi's fault.

I don't understand how a budget has anything to do with healthcare. Both are very important policies and something the American public can not go without. My opinion is both should be discussed separately and can not have anything attached to them. I feel for this all effected by this it is absolutely ridiculous that the gov even has the option to not pass these things as we would all be expected to in our daily lives. We do not get to withold our bills because we can not agree! They should all be sequestered in the house until they reach an agreement. Walked to the bathroom for bathroom breaks and brought food. Oh and not get paid!!!!

They aren't related - tying them is a strategic political move. Completely inept and unconstructive behavior going on in Washington. I wonder how quickly things would get resolved if we held the House, Senate and Exec office's checks during this progress...or better yet, had them all apply for and pay for private insurance outside of the guaranteed govt system. I'm so over this entire debate...

As someone who gives out skittles to the poors every day, I can tell you the positive impact that the ACA will have on so many needing Americans.

It's incredibly sad that WIC is considered nonessential, especially given that this is October 1, and therefore, no funding this month for WIC recipients. No checks to pick up, no education classes, nothing. The children are suffering at the expense of a bunch of rich people who are completely out of touch with reality.

Knowing this I will be donating as much as I can to women in need this month! (I do a couple of times a year usually but I will make an extra effort this month). Makes me sad and frustrated children who need help will go without this month....

I'm planning to do a pantry clean out tonight and drop stuff off at the food bank. I presume that will be bombarded.
I was planning on doing the same thing and dropping it by our church food pantry, but maybe I should look for a better known one around town. I'm not sure who our church serves honestly, though I know it gets emptied quickly after it's full.

And who's to blame... Cause it really doesn't matter.

Except it DOES matter. We have the power to vote the responsible assholes out of office next time they're up for re-election.

If we sit around and do nothing it would be no surprise if this happens again.

This right here. I always take note when Congress does something that I don't agree with. I then check to see if any of my "representatives" had a part in it. If they did, I refuse to vote for them again.

The only way to get the change we want/need is to change the people out who keep doing the same crap over and over.

Amen sisters! Ya'll couldn't have said it better! It does matter...now we know who's responsible for this, we get rid of them next election cycle.

  • The worst part about it is that the republicans in congress are celebrating this! They are happy the government is shut down. They're praising that it's a good day and this is exactly what they want. Even though the majority of the country is against it.
Not sure where you heard this but it's not true. No one wanted a shut down. The fact is neither side is budging. Dems aren't the heros in this situation, they aren't willing to negotiate either. It's the problem with a bi-partisan gov't. Neither side agrees and neither will budge at all. I am directly affected by this furlough and hope they figure their shit out soon. It just bothers me that everyone is blaming the other side. It's ALL of congress that has caused this situation.

To clarify, the majority of republicans in congress ARE happy about the shutdown. 49% to be exact. 44% of republicans in congress disapprove. I actually saw the republicans leave last night after all this with smiles and comments like "this is exactly what we want". You say both sides are the problem...I highly disagree! The Dems have nothing to negotiate about. Why would they negotiate something that has already been passed? The votes have been made. FACT: the majority of America approves of the AHA, what other negotiations need to be made?

Once again, that FACT is not true. 3 separate polls conducted in September 2013 showed that the majority of Americans disapprove of the Affordable Care Act. And you can bet Dems are ecstatic right now about this shut down because everyone is blaming Reps and it makes them look horrible which will lead to great odds for the Dems to get re-elected. Don't be fooled into thinking this all isn't about policital posturing and campaigning for the future. I'm not saying what the Republicans are doing is right. I'm pissed about the furlough, like I said I'm a gov't contractor which means when Govies aren't working, I'm not working. And the Republicans have put forth 3 proposals now to get the funding passed. One of which was to approve Obamacare in it's entirety but removing the exemptions in place for Congress and Lobbyists- seems reasonable? Democrats voted No.

For clarity, I do NOT agree with what @hercules03 said. I am so sorry for everyone that is affected by this. It is completely unfair we are being used as pawns in this political game. I didn't want to get lumped in since I seem to have a very unpopular opinion here.

If he's working there should be pay, even if it comes late. All the workers that were sent home have a much higher chance of never getting paid for that time.
Yes, there SHOULD be. In the mean time, bills still come, expenses still happen, daycare still needs to be paid (even though he's not) and the world in which money makes goes round, still turns. I feel just as badly for the ones who are laid off as well, as we speak I'm at work helping them all apply for UI. Good thoughts to all that need it.
  • @piffel42 even if they get paid late what are they suppose to tell the landlords. and utility companies? Here is you IOU I got one so I guess you have to have one too, I do not think that will fly with people...

I don't think the bolded is entirely true. I believe it would have still delayed the individual mandate. Not to be nitpicky, but that's an important detail.

Thoughts to those that are directly affected by this.

Aside from that and everything that's already been said... I do think a lot of the blame can be placed on the Tea Party/far, far right. They've helped make the political climate such that if any person in office even appears to work with or compromise with the other side, they're demonized and targeted for attack by their own party. Look at all the backlash Gov. Christie got during the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

When Regan was in office with a Democratic Congress and even Clinton with a Republican Congress, they were still able to compromise and get things done, despite strong core differences.
When Clinton was in oiffice we had a 20+ day shutdown.

The problem is Americans are quick to forget the details and nobody pays the price for their actions - on both sides

  • @hercules03 doesn't believe in abortion, but she does believe in starving all the living babies who rely on WIC in order to make a point. Sweet.
That seems to be the general consensus among the "pro-lifers." Get 'em out alive and after that IDAF what happens to those precious little babies. Let 'em starve...
What? No. That goes too far.

That comment. None of the pro-lifers I know (myself included) feel that way. There are extremists of course, but don't assume that's the general opinion.

Exactly.  Both pro-abortion and anti-abortion groups have their extremist members.   You can dislike the opposing side's view, but unfairly summarizing it like that is a straw man argument.  I disagree with the pro-abortion stance, but I also know that it includes a lot of people who genuinely believe they're supporting what is right.  I don't need to demonize them to support my opinion.  And should be the same in reverse because there are plenty of decent people on both sides of that debate.

  • I believe the republicans submitted three alternatives which were all turned down. The dems aren't budging. I'm not a fan of Obamacare at all, and don't think it should have anything to do with passing a budget. So, yes, once our pay was approved (we are military), I say shut it down. I don't want to be forced on Obamacare. I love America! I love what we stand for but I do not believe int he government controlling so much. And as someone who is very much anti-abortion (FFFC on Tuesday), I don't believe the government should be paying for it. It blows my mind how everyone is concerned with child death in regards to school shooting but millions of babies die a year from abortion and nobody bats an eye. Anyways, my point being, I read where Cinton told dems to call the bluff of the GOP. I believe the GOP should stand their ground. And they are. This is a two way street - if dems aren't willing to negotiate, then why should repubs? I have yet to hear of any negotiating from the democrats... So eff them all. Shut it down. The base here is losing the library, and some other on essential services - nothing that affects us directly.

@hercules03 this is the best thing I've heard all day

That would be a first I think a MOD getting banned, I think it's funny that the abortion word got thrown in. Last time I checked this was about the government shut-down and nothing on their agenda has anything to do with abortion. My take on the welfare program and it has been my take for many years, if you truly need the help then it should be there for you. What I do not like is the ladies who have no self respect for themselves or others and just stay on the program. I think a person should only be able to collect it for a year, unless there is some extreme circumstance. WIC is a wonderful program and sad to say but this will be reality by the end of this week or next families are going to have to make some choices on how to feed their children. My hopes is this does not go on long, that they all can reach some kind of decisions, after all the very people they are hurting now are the ones that choose their fate when it comes to re-election...

I think it takes a lot of self respect to recognize that you need help and seek it out.
It does and sometimes I feel like all the wrong people get the help, the people who do not want to admit they need help are usually the ones that need it the most.
